I have an 8 horse Honda, 1996 vintage and I have one complaint about it. The mechanism that is housed in the trottle grip that's supposed to be adjustable for throttle tension doesn't work so well. I like to troll a lot and keep the throttle at a steady rpm without constantly messing with it.

My 5hp Honda had a much better system where there was a screw attached to a knob that put tension on the linkage bar....but this 8 uses a cable all the way up to the grip.

Any tips??

Thanks in advance,

It appears no one has answered...so I will take a shot....

Pull the rubber grip #16 off of the handle. Under it, is the little mechanism # 11that does the tensioning. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/H..., JPN, VIN# BACS-1100001/HANDLEBAR/parts.html

The rubber probably has some glue under it, so you will have to use a slim jim kind of tool, a long skinney screwdriver, or whatever and stick it under all around it to break the seal. A little WD40 after that will help you pull it off more easily. It generally is still not easy.

Once it is off, clean everything with some brakeclean to de goo it. Sometimes the mechanism just comes out of the little grooves that it is supposed to sit in. You can check it out before you put the rubber piece back on.

Just use a few touches of glue when you go to put it back together. Remember how hard it was to get off. You will probably have to do it again sometime in the future.
