Re: 1996 mercruiser 5.7 with thunderbolt ignition ... Top End knock Please Help

Well everything is back together and I'm going to get the boat tonight as long as it passes the mechanics water test. Ended up putting a new starter on it as well since the old one was hanging up a bit. total work done
pull and replace motor ... $600
Other labor .... $600
4 barrel carb, high rise intake, circulation pump ... $200
Cam and lifters ... $150
Starter ... $200
Gaskets ect ... $250ish
extra prop ... $30
Exhaust butterflies ... $200
Head work $350
Outdrive parts ... $250
Drain plug hose kit (will be nice to get everything out) ... $50
After everything is said and done im into the drivetrain for about $3000 just in case any of you were wondering

I think that is excellent pricing for all the stuff that was done. Let's hope that the engine does you well for a long time. :)

Im glad someone can afford to stimulate the economy. LOL :D

Sounds like they covered a lot of areas,
Good luck with everything!

LOL Well no point in having a toy if you cant use it. :D I would have liked to keep the money in my account but hey sometimes you just have to break out the checkbook and eat it.

as for inversion or sucking water just because its a AUTOMOTIVE cam.... lol like 99.9 percent of the rest of marine engines dosent mean it will be a problem

2, split duration cam recommended for most marine uses, exhaust having a longer duration and higher lift, makes up for how restrictive most marine exhausts are, more gases going out means no water coming in!!

3, The equal duration/equal lift cams are for higher rpm uses, like a performance 350, now these do have a risk of sucking water IF you dont do your home work, so with that been said, i guess thats why we have thru-hull exhaust ehh??
I wanted to let this go, but it was directed at me so I couldn't  and it's simply contradictory on its own. First you say there is no difference, then you give two examples of why cam selection is important. Thru hull exhaust does NOT eliminate REversion risk; only dry exhaust or proper cam selection does. Another Mod removed your absolutely false statement about carbs. Please, when replying to technical threads, let's keep the info factual, and safe, and at least try and not contradict yourself while trying to prove you know something. Doesn't work and it's simply confusing for those who are actually trying to pay attention.

BTW, very few people here have ever claimed much marine difference for a SBC long block except the cam, brass core plugs and sometimes head gaskets are mentioned. When it comes to fuel systems and electrical they ABSOLUTELY need to be marine rated, and if anyone claims differently on this site they will be corrected.

Sorry coopin, this poor thread has just had issues. Let's all hope your engine doesn't. It sounds like it was put together correctly and I wish I was playing along with your first test runs. Good luck!!!

Well guys I got a chance to take it out for a few hours today and man did it run great. Only had two issues ... while we were parked my son decided to play with the switches and flipped the kill switch on the throtle. I went to start it back up after sitting enjoying the sun for a bit and it wouldnt start. I thouht ohh no here we go again. But luckily for me he started playing with it again and I realized he flipped it off lol. The only other issue im having is getting the right prop on it. The mechanic put a 21 pitch prop on it and it just dosnt jump on plane like it did with my stainless 19 pitch. I think im just going to switch it back and see how it does. But on the bright side I can stay on play with the 21 at around 3k rpm. decisions decisions any advice on props would be greatly appreciated.

Stay with the 21 for a while till the motor gets worked in. Try and keep the rpm below 3500. I had a 21 on my inline 165 and it was a little slow coming out of the water but cruised nice. Baby the motor for a few more hours before you push it.
Hey! Don't recall you putting up any pictures of your boat. How can we tell you if we don't know what your driving?:)

Yeah I'm going to try and take it easy on the motor for a while until the cam breaks in (we did run it for about 20 min in nuetral at 2000 rpms for initial break in) I plan on taking it easy for a few weekends until im confident in it again. I will try to get some pictures posted of the actual boat (1995 marada cuddy cabin 21' give or take) so you guys can see what im working with as far as size. That is the only issue im having with the prop is that it takes a bit more than im use to to get it out of the water. I just want to get the best set up that I can to hook up without giving myself to much rpm range (dont want to chance giving it too much). But we do a lot of watersports so coming out of the water fairly fast is kind of important.
