Just returned from trip this weekend and was having problems with 9.9. Probably 2 problems. First one dealing with motor stalling after about 5 minutes. Squeezing bulb seemed to correct that problem so I'm guessing gas line leak. Problem #2 is more serious. I just changed oil before trip because it was low (first time) and had motor oil residue on lower shaft. Ran it all day Saturday, motor died. After boat was loaded I checked oil level and it only about an inch left on the dipstick! Filled it back up and ran it for a little while but decided to use big motor until I figure out where the oil is going. Trailered it back home (350 miles) and during gas stops I would check it. Lower shaft was leaking oil out of what appears to be water drain holes just above the lower gearcase Any ideas?

John

Re: 1997 Yamaha T9.9 ELRV oil consumption

Changed oil tonite. Oil was very dark, didn't smell like fuel contamination, put the oil in glass jar and didn't separate. Drained out full quart so it didn't leak much but I didn't run it more than an hour after adding oil. Plugs looked pretty gunked up so I replaced them. Checked fuel water separator (Racor) and no water. I would like to take it out for the last hurrah this weekend. Called 3 different Yamaha dealers and none have ever run into this kind of problem on 9.9 but have in larger 4 strokes. Any ideas on what else to check?

Ran motor for about 10 minutes on portable tank. Ran good for a while, then died when increasing rpms. Switched hose over to main tank, same results. Shut down, checked oil. Looked ok, checked oil filter screen and had small particles on screen. Doesn't look good. Won't be going this weekend. Thanks for the replies.

the oil problem is a strange one. the drain holes are to drain water from the cavities where water can get trapped so as to prevent corrosion, typically i have only seen gear oil come from these when the shift shaft boot tears/leaks. if it is engine oil draining from theses holes you may have a sump problem, quite possibly from corrosion. the fuel line leak is most likely your fitting. pull it off and check the oring is ok.
rarely have i seen those pumps fail if ever? check your tank breather also.

Checked oil during daylight today and full of metal shavings. Really don't look good now. Took it up to dealer who will be tearing it down next week. Looks like end of 2004 to me. Motor is 1997 and had roughly 350 hours on it. Still can't figure what caused the failure. Oil is changed after every trip usually at 50 hours on hourmeter. It is definately motor oil and appears to be disappearing during usage. Had a slight oil slick on the driveway when using muffs for testing.

Dealer says motors toast. Not sure what my next step will be. Is it possible to get a new powerhead and what would be the cost? They have several used 9.9 high thrust long shaft motors there that they would like to sell me.
