You need to order the factory service manual for your outboard. It will make life much easier for you because you are going to want it for this job. You are correct the shift rod is not connected to the power head. You will have to remove the power head to release the shift rod so you can drop it. It looks like both shift rods are available so you will be able to replace them which you should do.

ordered a 15p solas new saturn since my aluminum is dinged up from a rock on the boat ramp (power loading). it picked up almost 1.5 mph on the top end and hole shot seemed almost the same. motor was turning 5600 - 5700. I believe i can pick up another 50 - 100 rpm by raising the motor when my transom riser comes in.

I'd like to replace the water pump this winter so I have a history of maintenance. I removed the intake grate, and the previous owner had welded the two shift rods together!

Are you sure they're welded together? I can't imagine someone doing something that illogical. There are some little black "keepers" that are actually are split and can be pulled off the rods so that the shift rods can disconnect. You probably already know how to do this, but they are kind of tricky (were for me, anyway) and I wanted to mention it before you pulled the powerhead just in case.

Yeah JB...those little black things are the pits....and you better have all the paint off those shift rods too....none of that stuff comes apart easily if there is paint on the rods....

yep, the coupling connectors are gone and the shift shaft is welded together - very sloppily might i add. i have ordered a service manual, just waiting for it to arrive. is there a kit available that has the connectors and shift rods together, or must all be purchased seperate?

You have to order separate parts. I believe your outboard is a long shaft.

Hard to say without a bit more of a close up and a top view but i cant see anything that makes them look ill.
Are they similar?

They look good to me, are all three plugs similar? A top down photo of all three would be better.

Just reading all ihave two of them the first did the same thing ending up being a white stuff that was in the high speed jets bought a card cleaner took it all apart soak them all nite blow them out put it back together raan great still does good thing u took oil mix offthere my other motor

Those look good to me. Are you concerned about it runninng to lean? How does the motor idle?

i just wanted to be sure it was getting enough fuel due to the fact that i used a set of used 25 hp carbs with the 35 hp jets, especially since i removed the oil injection and im premixing and thats the source of lubrication. the venturi was the same size, same casting number, all other parts had the same number, only difference was the high and low speed jets. I havent yet replaced the temp switch, so it was idling a little high - i fixed that by hooking the switch back up and just cutting the high temp wire. it now idles at 725 - 750. Just need to rebuild the water pump because it doesnt pee as much water as id like at the lowest idle speed. anything about 900 rpm, and it gushes out.

If you are mixing 50:1 you won't have a problem. I actually mix a little richer than that too much oil is better than not enough IMHO. The water pump should out a good stream at idle and considering what the previous owner did I don't blame you for wanting to change it.

gets even better with the previous owner. no thermostat assembly at all in the motor. i notice the kit is no longer available, but i can buy the parts seperate. i noticed the screw in cover/cap came with the kit, but is no longer available seperate - is this part reusable, as i already have one?

That part is reusable. It is plastic so make sure you don't over tighten it.

excellent. i'm going to use a dremel to cut the shift shaft where its welded so i dont have to remove the powerhead. does anyone happen to know the shift rod size? I'm going to take it to a plumbing shop and have a coupler installed for easy removal next time.

Just a word of caution here.--------The upper shift rod needs to be adjusted to a particular dimension.----This affects the proper shifting and such.--------------There is a ball detent on the side of the block and that is nuetral.-------If you do not proper clutch dog engagement you risk serious damage in the gearcase !!!
