So I bought a boat last year with 50 horse Force on it. Engine ran great except for one time when I was in Northern Wisconsin. I got gas up north before hitting the lake. Well The Engine wouldn't Idle. I could start it fine with the warm up lever in high, smoke like hell, but when I would push it down to go into gear, it would die. I could get it to go if I left the lever in High and quickly pushed it down and put the throttle down. It planes out on top end, but I just can't get it to idle in low. So I was assuming I got bad gas. When we got back from up north I put it away for a couple weeks and tried in on the hose ears before going out one last time and it ran fine. Well this spring I got it out and it ran fine. The prior 3 trips I used the motor to troll for walleyes and I could get it to down to run around 1.8 miles per hour and everything was good. Well it happened again a couple of days ago. What I found out after changing plugs, and running it on the hose, was that I was getting a lot of unburnt fuel/oil out of the exhaust and when I took the new plugs out, one was burnt, like a 2 cycle would be and the bottom one was wet, but clean. I will be doing a compression check today. I did a spark check the old way and the top cylinder had good arc from the plug to the block and bottom had spark, but didn't seem as strong. I bought a spark tester today and will be doing a better test.
Am I on the right track or am I missing something? Oh I also cleaned out the carb. I don't have a manual yet and been going off what most say on here. What would be the best manual for a 1999? I don't know how much was really Mercury on these 1999's. Should I get a 1999 Mercury Manual or a Force?
Thanks for any help.
