So I bought a boat last year with 50 horse Force on it. Engine ran great except for one time when I was in Northern Wisconsin. I got gas up north before hitting the lake. Well The Engine wouldn't Idle. I could start it fine with the warm up lever in high, smoke like hell, but when I would push it down to go into gear, it would die. I could get it to go if I left the lever in High and quickly pushed it down and put the throttle down. It planes out on top end, but I just can't get it to idle in low. So I was assuming I got bad gas. When we got back from up north I put it away for a couple weeks and tried in on the hose ears before going out one last time and it ran fine. Well this spring I got it out and it ran fine. The prior 3 trips I used the motor to troll for walleyes and I could get it to down to run around 1.8 miles per hour and everything was good. Well it happened again a couple of days ago. What I found out after changing plugs, and running it on the hose, was that I was getting a lot of unburnt fuel/oil out of the exhaust and when I took the new plugs out, one was burnt, like a 2 cycle would be and the bottom one was wet, but clean. I will be doing a compression check today. I did a spark check the old way and the top cylinder had good arc from the plug to the block and bottom had spark, but didn't seem as strong. I bought a spark tester today and will be doing a better test.

Am I on the right track or am I missing something? Oh I also cleaned out the carb. I don't have a manual yet and been going off what most say on here. What would be the best manual for a 1999? I don't know how much was really Mercury on these 1999's. Should I get a 1999 Mercury Manual or a Force?

Thanks for any help.

Okay, so I got home to do Compression test. Top Cylinder was 100. I couldn't get the tester to screw into the bottom Cylinder. So Instead I put the spark tester on the bottom and put the hose on and started it up. Ran perfect. No Smoking, no excess fuel/oil mix out of the exhaust. Spark tester worked great. So I put the tester on the upper cylinder and ran it again. Perfect. So I put everything back on and ran on the hose for about 10 minutes. Purrs.

Happy, but I don't know why this is happening? Frustrated that this happened for the 2nd time know

What would be the best manual for a 1999?

A motor specific factory manual is best.

A Clymer Force repair manual is next on the list.

THe seloc is terrible for Force motors.

It may sound crazy, but replace the fuel pump diaphragm.
As they age, they tear and get holes, allowing fuel to leak into the crankcase, flooding out the bottom cylinder.
It a common issue with fuel pumps over 10 years old.

Get the fuel pump rebuild kit from a Merc dealer for about $15.
Even if it turns out to not be the issue, it is due for a rebuild.
