Hi everyone ! I just purchased this used suv . I have a problem with the brake lights . When the peddle is depressed it will flash on for just a second but it will not stay on . Any suggestions on the fix . I know it does need a right hand turn bulb but I don't think that would effect the brake lights . Or would it ? Could it be I just need to replace the brake lamp bulbs ?
Any help would be appreciated ...Thanks !

If the turn signal light is the same as the brake light, it could affect it, do you have a wiring diagram by any chance?

It seems like there are 2 turn lamps on each side light cluster . The one that is blown is the amber side bulb . I will pick up a bulb and see what happens . I don't have a diagram . I will see if I can find one on the web ..

Make sure you check the fuse and for power at the brake pedal.

The next step is to check the Body Control Module. Someone that has a OBDII with enhanced GM capability can do a check for you.

Out of curiosity, does your cruise control cancel when you step on the brake pedal? I believe they share the same switch.

I have not tried the cc yet, but that makes sense . Fuses are good . Where would I check power at the pedal ? Would the switch be up under the dash panel ? I plan on bringing it to the shop and let them check it out . Just got sidetracked having to lay some floor tile for my niece .

Not sure if this makes a difference but the space where the brake lamp relay is empty .

If I slowly press the pedal down the brake light will come on . I can hold just slight pressure and it will stay on but when I apply more pressure the light goes out . Maybe the switch going bad ? It looks really hard to get to under the dash .

The fact that it goes on for a second is curious. Sounds like a switch doesn't it? Can you jumper across the switch with a test lead?

Hard to tell but it looks like there are no contacts for that relay. Also, I wonder if that relay is for towing. What does the owners manual say?

Sure seems like it would be a switch as that should be one of your easier, lower cost solutions because if you Google 2000 Cadillac escalade brake light problems, there are a few other ideas floating online that seem expansive and hard to fix.:faint2:

Hope it's easy, Good luck.:)

I think I have my 2001 Suburban factory service manuals still. Probably the same. I will need to look.

The manual does not specify what the relay is for . I also just noticed on the bank of large fuses at the bottom of the pic the one that is missing is listed as a 30 amp stoplamps .. But it is missing one side of the terminals .

Re: 2000 Escalade brake light

I just looked at my 99 Silverado. Switch has 6 pins so no testing is going to be easy without a manual. Looks very easy to replace but I bet the Escalade has fancy panels you need to remove.

Never realized that the Escalade was still 1st gen in 2000 unlike the Suburban/Tahoe which changed to second gen that year. I looked up the 2000 Escalade brake switch though and it is also a 6 pin switch.

Don't know how I will get to it from the top . Prolly have to take the dash apart . And I read something about moving the steering column out of the way . :twitch:

I have a 1997 Suburban Service manual which is probably just like yours. There is a trouble shooting table.

Do your hazard lights work? Apparently they are the same bulb on 1st gen Suburban/Escalade

I cam email you a picture of the diagnostics table if you would like. Sure sounds like your switch though.

Re: 2000 Escalade brake light

Thanks Bruce I would have to have it hooked up to a diagnostic machine to use the table correct ?
I took it out today to check the CC . The brake pedal did turn off the CC ..
I am also having trouble with my temp gauge . It will only go a little over 100 deg . I grounded the gauge and it maxed out so I assume that the gauge is ok . I guess I need to replace the sensor ..
Hard to find time to deal with these problems . Wish I could take a few days off ..

Re: 2000 Escalade brake light

Nope...just a few wires to test.

Since there are so many wires going to this switch, the CC probably has its own dedicated circuit.

Nothing is easy anymore. These damn CAN bus systems make everything tough. I would lean towards a switch problem as well. It's the easiest to test at least.
