Would that vent the air around the closed cover to the outside of the boat? Mine is tight as can be, I can't imagine that any air would get through there.

I would have to look closely at the cap, maybe even apply some air pressure at points. While it does fit tight, I would bet there is a slight gap between the metal cap and just under it which connects to the middle piece

It states its vented so it must do it

Yeah it must do it somehow, its been on there since I bought the boat in 2009, just crazy to think looking at it that it vents. I will take a closer look and maybe try the compressed air.

What you could try is this, if you can access the vent fitting on the gas tank, disconnect the hose and suck on the hose, if you can suck air through it then it's venting.

Ok, so I hate when I read through these posts and they just stop w/o a solution to the original issue. The boat is now running like a champ (and will hopefully remain that way for a while).

My issue of no-start was traced to a failed high pressure fuel pump. By the time the pump was replaced, I had done a full tune up and then some. I had installed the following: New plugs, new plug wires, new distributor cap and rotor, new ignition coil, and new fuel pressure regulator. The boat wouldn't start until the pump was replaced, but I am not certain that the pump failure was due to anything that I had replaced. I am more and more thinking it was due to a venting issue.

When I was taking the boat out for the first time after getting it back, I put 10 gallons of fuel in it. While out on the lake after I had pulled the kids on the tube for a while, we took a break out in the middle of the lake. I tried to remove the gas cap as to look at something and I could not budge it. I believe there was a vacuum on it and it was not allowing the tank to vent. This is the perko venting gas cap that I mentioned above. I had already ordered the cap a few weeks prior and it actually happened to come in the mail that day. After comparing the new cap and the one on the boat, I realized the rubber gasket that went around the inside part of the cap was missing. This allowed me to screw the old cap tightly down onto the fuel fill fitting and I believe it prevented the system from venting.

I installed the new cap and there is now a noticeable gap around the bottom of the cap where the venting can take place when necessary. No issues since then and I have been out 7 or 8 times. If things change I will update this thread.

Thanks for the update. Glad you’re boating again!
Hope the new pumps were free.
