I found this boat free on craigslist, hence the nothing in my title. At no initial cost, I am ready to do anything to it! :D I told my wife it is my 3 year project; she screamed!

I have to first gut the rotted interior and finish pulling up the half-existent carpet covered plywood deck. From there my thoughts are that I will have to replace the stingers as the bottom is waterlogged and it has been in storage for a few years.

The engine was pulled 2 years ago for a cheap fix for the previous owner's other boat. So I will have to buy a new inboard engine.

The original brass rudder, prop and shaft are still there, green, but there - and surprisingly the mechanics still work to the wheel.

We'll see what else I run into as I tear into this beast.

I am a noob at this and look forward to diving in! I just found out my father-in-law ran a fiberglass shop for a boat manufacturer for 20 years and he was a general contractor, so he has offered to help. I know electrical, carpentry, and some mechanics. I have several close friends who are good with engines. So I'm hoping my small army can do this. Celebration will be a boat ride in 3 years!!

I will post full images as I work on this. Any and ALL advice is welcome!

Here is a link to a photo album I have started for this baby. http://cid-b8d6d370afcbdb12.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Boat Pics

Looks like a great project and I bet, what with the army of firends and family you have, this'll be wet in a lot less than three years.

Every question you have can be answered on this site.

Show us some progress pics and good luck......:)

Looks to be an inboard, probably a velvetdrive transmission.

What engine does it need?

I'm restoring an inboard from the hull up, I'm waiting for some warm weather to get back to work and will be glad to share photos and ideas.

I am of the opinion that inboards are one of the easier designs to rebuild. If the floor under the bow is solid, you may not need to pull the cap. With inboards, the stringers usually don't extend forward past the passenger compartment.

Think about your budget while you are waiting to start. With a floor, stringers and transom, replacement engine, replacement interior and whatever small stuff you need, you need to expect a low end rebuild to cost you at least $4,000.00 If you want the boat to look like it is new. . . well the sky is the limit.

I rebuilt my engine, and was able to reuse the crank, cam and pistons. Machine work, gaskets and all the little stuff like lifters, harmonic balancer, fuel pump, oil pump, gaskets, new risers, new carb etc really added up. I haven't totaled the receipts, but for a stock rebuild, I think I ended up spending close to 2 grand.

Go cruise that site and see if it helps.

A few things I forgot.

Get the title/registration before you spend any money on fixing the boat up.

figure out if the original engine was standard or reverse rotation. It sounds like the company used both.

If the trailer is a roller trailer, make sure you figure out how to properly support the hull before you do too much cutting.

Read, read and read some more. An hours research will save you many hours of work sometimes. More importantly it may save you from expensive mistakes.

Good luck, it sure looks like a great boat.

Whoops! Typo on my part - its a '72 not a '77. I guess I still have to work on my handwriting haha!

Thanks everyone for your direction so far.

How do I figure this out? I haven't researched the site yet on this.

Looks like a great boat. I agree with the advice on getting the title and registration before starting out. It depends on the state it is in, as to how much trouble that might be. I went through a total nightmare trying to get a trailer registered. Thankfully that is all behind me, and all I have to do is finish sanding and then paint this boat. It is a lot more trouble than I thought it was when I got it. But it will be worth it in the long run. :D

I got the title and registration transferred today. The trailer I am going to touch up and sell to fund the materials to build a new one. Technically, it is too small for the boat.

I am expecting to drop at minimum $5k into this baby, even with my connections. I may have a free engine - but it would have to be marinized. I want to do it right.

That is also why I'm estimating a 3 year build, to spread the budget and different parts of the project out. Year 1 - structural, deck and body (including a beautiful new exterior paint job - ugh this one is so 70's!!); year 2 engine, mechanics and electrical; year 3 trailer, cosmetics, and getting wet.

That's all the extended game plan - if I finish sooner, great!!!

If you have the prop, you should be able to determine rotation. Also the velvetdrive may have a tag and you may be able to research in that manner. Rudders are even slightly different sometimes between boats with standard and reverse rotation.

Good luck with the project

Original engine was a Chrysler 318. I have to look in the engine compartment to see if the tranny is still there. I didn't pay too much attention to that because I was intending on switching it over to an outboard, then I looked into the tunnel drive and decided to stay with that.

Still has original brass prop and rudder assembly. I hear that's worth some cash...

Most the yans I've seen are tunnel drive, supposedly a very good system.
I see them on craigslist too, I live in Boston, I guess its too much for most people to fix. Lots of engines on craigslist too.
You might be better off getting a real marine engine rather than converting over, a closed fresh water system for saltwater is best.

I've always liked the hull, nice bow flare and lots of freeboard, a full transom is better than an outboard cutout.

The trailer looks like its bent from the weight under the bow.

Before installing anything you will be wise to drill holes in the stringers and transom to check for rot and water intrusion, ez to fix now than later.

Looks like a very enjoyable project and will be worth good money when fixed.

I've got pics that I can put up tomorrow of the original rudder and prop gear. There's no transmission, so that means I should be able to put what I want with only the possibility of having to change the prop.

Re: Here goes nothing... Extreme Makeover 21' 1972 Penn Yan edition.

The trailer is bent under the weight. I need to find trailer plans so that I can make a new trailer and sell this one. Plus, the boat is a little forward in it's placement on the trailer.

I ripped up the aft deck today and checked the stringers. All of the aft stringers are shot, need to replace those, haven't finished the deck midship under the wheel yet - but from the looks of it, they aren't bad.

The transom is solid!!! :D Wooohoooo!!!! That was glassed before the stringers were installed and did not suffer any rot from contact.

But... there is always a but... :( the rear cap has rotted plywood between the glass layers, so that's soft. Any suggestions short of ripping it up and fabricating my own?

Got pics of this rot in the cap?

BTW, I still don't see any photos in this thread. And I been on two different PC's. Maybe something funny with the thread?

I'll repost the pics and upload them instead of embed them. I still don't have much in the line of detail, as weather here has been extremely poor the last 2 weeks and I won't have my garage until august when my wife and I build our house - she still doesn't know the boat has a home and our cars will be kicked to the driveway.
