Re: 3.0L 'nilla milkshake
Okay, finally got to pulling the exhaust manifold, which as I found out it the same as the intake manifold.

The intake chambers on 1&2 were rust colored, but I wouldn't say they looked like they were deteriorating. Exhaust chambers on 1&2 were black and sooty with specs of rust here and there.

The intake chambers on 3&4 looked to be a little more rusty, with some 'shiny' caked on areas. Minimal, but it wasn't present on 1&2. Exhaust chamber showed a few more specs of rust, but not much.

Still not sure what the 'riser' is that everyone is talking about. The manifold connect directly do an elbow that routes the gases back down and then through the transom. Maybe I don't have a riser? Since it's off and from what I read only has about a 10 year life(I have a '92 Bayliner), should I just go ahead and replace it? If so, OEM or is aftermarket okay and where do you reccomend to purchase? Oh yeah, the drain plug didn't drain any water, but water did come out when I removed the unit.

Since I still had a 1/2 hour of sun left, I pulled the valve cover to have a look. Caked on white goo everywhere..yuck. At any rate, I didn't want to go much further so I was just dinking around when I noticed 'one of these things didn't look like the other'. The valve spring cap on the intake valve of the #4 cylinder was gone. Parts of it(but not all) were laying around on top of the head. Not looking good.

So, what now?????

This valve assembly obviously needs to get fixed and I'm guessing that I should go ahead and pull the head since I'm getting into it...right? I have never done this before, but I am very handy and can follow directions well. Am I getting in over my head, yet?

Assuming that I'm not yet over my head and you all say go for it, what next? My impression is that I need to remove the head and keep the rocker assemblies intact, except for removing the pushrods, which I understand can be done by loosening the rocker arms and have it serviced. But wait, I may still have a problem with a cracked head since I still haven't solved the water problem, so should I just bag it all and buy a new head? Does a new head come with the valve assembly?

What about the missing metal valve cap pieces? If I can't find it anywhere, I assume it made it's way into the oil pan. Can I just leave it there? I don't know how hard it would be to remove while still in the boat, but I certainly had no plans to remove the entire engine. (I think I would just replace the engine if it came to that)

Anything else I should be doing while I'm into it? Lot's to read, I know, but thanks for your patience. I know it's sick, but I'm kinda enjoying this process.
