Wow. Family planned to spend a relaxing overnight on the hook of their 30 footer. Had to abandon ship in the dark. They were burned but were able to swim to a nearby island. Dog onboard did not survive, very sad.
As someone who does a LOT of overnighting onboard, this is truly a nightmare scenario. Wonder what caused the fire. As an ex-firefighter, I’m very aware of the dangers and try my best to be prepared (auto extinguishing system, multiple handheld units, CO alarm).

This is in my local news. They got lucky for sure.
If I hear what caused the fire I’ll relay the info.
Luckily the water is still pretty warm here so they had that on their side but the currants in that area can be crazy so even more lucky in that sense that they were able to make it to shore.
There was a guy last week that fell off the ferry during a storm and none saw him go over. He spent 90 minutes in 4 to 5 foot seas before a passenger on another ferry just happened to see him in the water. Coast guard was able to retrieve him with a helicopter and he is ok.

We put these accidents out of our minds.
It really shows just how much equipment is needed to survive a sinking.
