Wow. Family planned to spend a relaxing overnight on the hook of their 30 footer. Had to abandon ship in the dark. They were burned but were able to swim to a nearby island. Dog onboard did not survive, very sad.
As someone who does a LOT of overnighting onboard, this is truly a nightmare scenario. Wonder what caused the fire. As an ex-firefighter, I’m very aware of the dangers and try my best to be prepared (auto extinguishing system, multiple handheld units, CO alarm).

This is in my local news. They got lucky for sure.
If I hear what caused the fire I’ll relay the info.
Luckily the water is still pretty warm here so they had that on their side but the currants in that area can be crazy so even more lucky in that sense that they were able to make it to shore.
There was a guy last week that fell off the ferry during a storm and none saw him go over. He spent 90 minutes in 4 to 5 foot seas before a passenger on another ferry just happened to see him in the water. Coast guard was able to retrieve him with a helicopter and he is ok.

We put these accidents out of our minds.
It really shows just how much equipment is needed to survive a sinking.

Does not look like a 50' boat to me.----Sad to say but out on big water things can go wrong in a heart beat.

Why can people think a boat or airplane is as safe as a ca r ???????? It never will be.
Stop being to lazy or cheap to learn how they can easily kill people.
There are Marine Safety Courses to teach you what is needed and how to use the equipment.

The marine safety course is just that, a safety course. You can’t teach boat handling in a class room. Nothing replaces knowledge and experience of local waters.

In this particular case, Oregon inlet is passage for the large commercial fishing fleet working out of Manteo and Wanchese, NC.

Notice how smooth the water is on the outside of the bar

No boat VHF radio ? No life jackets ? No flares ? No hand held VHF ?
Anymore .....Lets take the kids on a overnighter ?

Ever tried to swim miles with a life vest on ? I can not.

Drink salt water and no solid food ? What hypothermia ?

I do not need to let shore people and USCG know where I am. And how long cruise will last.

From what I heard, when they abandoned ship that night, there was only time to get themselves and a couple PFD’s out. They couldn‘t even get their dog overboard. They initially tried to smother the flames but it was just too intense.
The boy discovered their portable VHF radio washed up on the beach the next morning and used it to call the CG.
I imagine the island was pretty close to the boats position. I know I like to anchor in shallow water close to land, if only to be well away from a channel or speeding boat.
if I’m away from the dock for more than a day or two, I fill out a USCG Float Plan and leave it on my dockbox.

Had a guy come in the marina several years ago, he was out with the family for a few days trip. He took water on overnight, the boat was getting full and water was over the floor in the fwd cabin. He activated the bilge pump, it had no automatic float. Got to pumped out and came on a saturday to is. I got the call and went down there, couldn’t find the leak at first. Using a hose I sprayed after around the integrated swim platform. The platform was real close to the waterline and overnight waves were slapping and after awhile it got low enough for the water to flow by itself. I dried the area and removed a section of the rubrail, sealed the area, and installed the rail. Sprayed water and no leak at that point. He got very lucky, him his wife, a three year old and a 6 months old onboard. His bilge pump, he had to open the engine bay and twist the wires together! That was repaired by me before I let him leave with a float and switch . Lake Superior will take you, cold water gives no care who you are. Keep safe my friends!

Sadly the mother 73 passed away yesterday from her injuries.
I saw the initial news reports and then the subsequent report about the wife/mother. We occasionally go over to Tarpaulin Cove, which is where I believe they were anchored that evening.

Sad to hear about such a tragedy
