Not getting fuel to carb. put intake from gas can directly to pump still no gas. Wondering if I should replace the pump or does the filter in the pump need to be replaced? Also should I be able to blow through the inlet gas line that connects to the fuel pump back into the gas tank with ease. I tried but it was really diffucult. Also is there a filter in the tank that can be checked and how do you access it. Thanx--Bob Can you tell this is my first boat? 19 Ebbtide 4.3 mercruier alpha one

Does it have an electric or mechanical fuel pump. 92 was the changeover year.

It's a mechanical pump. I ordered a new one so we'll see. But should I be able to blow back through the gas line to the tank with ease or is there some kind of restricter or valve to prevent it.

Somebody could have put in an antisiphon valve or a (ugg) t valve in the boat someplace along the line. You'll have to follow the fuel line to the the gas tank to find out.
If you have a 30 gallon fuel tank full to the brim your not gonna be able to blow into the fuel line and expect to hear bubbles from the tank... not with lung power.

What ya shoulda done before you ordered the pump is splice in some clear hose in front of the fuel pump to check for a steady stream of fuel with NO bubbles.

Replacing parts without knowing whether they are good or bad can get really expensive, really quick.
Hopefully you are right on the pump. I would suspect the fuel pump filter to at least allow a little bit of gas to trickle in if that were the problem. Might be a ruptured diaphragm in the pump so you don't get any pull.

Re: 4.3 fuel problem

Well I just replaced the fuel pump and turned it over about 20 times and even started it with a little gas down the carb but it didn't keep running. Took hose off discharge of fuel pump and nothing. This may be a stupid question but what is the small line about 3/8 in. that runs from the fuel pump and the carb and what is it's purpose? Forgot to put that back on. I hope thats the problem, it started raining so I had to quit for now. Also tank is 3/4 full. Should I try sucking on the tank supply line and see what happens?

That clear tube has nothing to do w/ your probelms....it's a sight tube to tell you if the pump has ruptured a diaphram and directs fuel to the carb that would otherwise fill your bilge.

Instead of blindly throwing expensive parts, try Don's diagnosic steps and see what the problem is....

You can have rubber line from the pump to the carb as long as it is marine fuel line, and not automotive line. The steel brake like just looks better, and it in the long run a bit safer from leaks.

You need clear line and a double barb to splice in, get some at home depot.
Don't know how many times i can say that!!!
