Started draining the gear case yesterday with hopes of being able to replace the water pump next weekend.

No signs of water, but dang that oil was black like old used motor oil. Is that normal?

Looks like I dodged a bullet. Instead of double checking the service manual which clearly shows the lower drain under the gear case, I managed to pull the pivot screw. Luckily I was able to get it back in. I tested after by rotating the flywheel by hand and forward, reverse and neutral all seem to work perfectly.

I am thoroughly impressed. My prop just arrived back from PropMD repaired, balanced and repainted. It's so shiny I can't get a photo without a reflection. Looks as good or better than new.

I've looked through the service manual and parts list - several times. I cannot find any mention anywhere of a thermostat. Am I missing something or is one not required on this motor?

HELP! Finally a Sunday with 50 degree temp. I’m trying to replace the water pump. I had no problems getting the gear case removed and pulled the 3 screws holding the old pump. The OEM manual says to remove the pump and driveshaft (the lower end of the shaft on this model is a smaller dia where it goes through the pump). I have the pump loose, but for the life of me cannot get the drive shaft to come out. I tried putting a wood block on top of the gear case housing and hit it numerous times with a mallet while holding the driveshaft with my other hand, but see no signs of even the slightest budge.

I keep soaking the shaft with CRC Power Lube and now trying PB Blaster. Still no luck so far.

I don’t have a slide hammer, but have sometimes improvised with a heavy pair of vise grips. Use a heavy rubber mat to protect the shaft as well as to grip, and tap upwards with a hammer. If it’s badly corroded in the pinion gear, you might have to pull off the bottom of the gearcase to get at it.

Yee Haw! Thank you Thank you! That did it! I used a piece of the edging from one of my shop mats (about 1/2" thick rubber). 4 taps later it was out! Might even have enough time after dinner to install the new pump assembly. :)

You're welcome. Looks good!

You could try the pump before replacing the l.u. -- tub of water big enough to fully cover the pump, then turn the shaft clockwise. Can use a hand drill (1/2", I guess, for that one), or just turn the shaft by hand. If water bubbles up in the grommet, you are good to go.

Just put a vernier on the shaft, it's .687 across the spines so even my 5/8" drill couldn't handle it. I can try by hand when I get a chance.

Maybe one of your sockets will fit for a short test. Wrap the shaft with some duct tape to help protect the splines.

Got to pressure test the gear case last night and all passed according to the manual. There's nothing in the manual about vacuum testing, so did it anyway at -10psi and that passed as well. Went ahead and filled the case with fresh oil and installed the plugs with new washers.

As for testing the pump in water, I'm planning on using some heavy braided hose as a coupling between the shaft and a socket on a drill with some hose clamps - should work right?? Too cold out to play with water right now.

Those pumps are elegantly simple.----I have never tested nor felt the need to test one in many years of working on motors.

Thank you racer, In that case, I'll just put it back together this weekend and wait for better weather to test run the whole motor with the test wheel in a barrel. - Eric
