I have come to discover from this site and people I talk to. The 470 and Bayliners have a lot in common.
1)everyone has an opinion on them whether they have owned one or not.
2)everyone has a bad opinion about them unless they have owned one.
3)much of what you read or hear about them is fiction not FACT.

I personally love my 470/170. If for no other reason its unique. You will find all kinds of sbc, bbc, boats out there. But when you blow right by a v/8/ powered boat with your 4 banger its kinda funny. Last year I destroyed a 4.3 crestliner and later at the dock we were talking and I opened the doghouse to show him it was a 4 cyl. He said Oh its a 470 yeah there fast but they dont hold up. I replied its a 1980 dude how much more do you think it should give lol.
Now I know they can be hard to get parts for, but when they are running right they are amazing.

Re: 470 Haters

This is just like OMC Stringer threads/posts. If you have one, great!! The so called "hate" comes into it when someone asks "should I buy this?" The honest (fair, true, right, correct) answer is that there are easier combos to live with. So unless it is the only boat that meets your needs, AND you're prepared to deal with the downsides, then don't buy it. That frankly, is good counsel. Does it mean all Stringers and all 470s are junk? No.

1. True, just like anything else, cars, trucks, football teams, movies, and the list goes on forever. I haven't owned one, but as a marine tech, I have worked on my share of them over the past 30+ years.

2. False, I have had many customers that bought them unknowingly, and after many $$$ of repairs and problems want nothing to do with them.

3. False. Things like the OEM charging system you can't get some of the parts for, the engine you can't get some parts for, the block being open deck design that means if you overheat it, it may very well have to have a new head gasket. The cam seal leak that allows antifreeze into the engine. are just a few of the problems that the 470 engine has, and they are fact, not fiction.

Be thankful you are one of the lucky owners that hasn't had many problems. if you look at these forums, you will see a lot of those engines being fixed, as well as different engines.
Just because you beat another boat in a race means nothing since things like weight, size, and hull design also come into play as far as speed goes.

Just wondering, was this post intended to start a fight or something? Everyone has opinions, now we know yours

As a Bayliner owner who has not had any problems, hasn't blinded me to why they have the rep they do.

Re: 470 Haters

oh my god if you take care of it it will last a very long time my motor is a 1983 470 and i just rebuilt mine for the first time that's not bad for a 29 year old motor so why should i hate it. you show me every motor of all sizes and HP that is 29 years old and i bet the majority has been rebuilt the ones that have not then the owner is a very good owner and know how to take care of a motor. as far as the head gaskets goes i see more cars with more blown head gaskest then i do in boat motors and the cam seals no big deal. if i can get another 29 years from my rebuilt motor then why should i hate it and if that's the only problems that happens to this motor i would not hesitate on buying another. as far as i'm concerned there's tonns of parts for these motors i had no problems finding them so there is no true answer to this thread.
P.S. preventative maintenance goes a long way!! just my two cents worth

I don't think anyone said anyone "should hate" a 470 . . . Weird how twisted this gets. There is nothing wrong with loving your 470. What would be wrong is recommending them to a new boater. Too much of a dice throw and it is well documented that they have their own specific issues that make them less desirable than some alternatives. It's that simple.

agreed to the people that are mechanically inclined then there is no problem but for people who are not mechanically inclined should not buy one just because they are not good stater motors but in my case i love a challenge so i guess it's in the eye of the beholder

Re: 470 Haters

I also like the 470, but I don't wear rose coloured glasses. As a concept they are a nice design, but the practicality is that they have issues, some more serious than most engines. Agreed that maintenance is the major issue with any engine, but you must admit a 470 is not as bullet-proof as an SBC, for example. As for the engines age, it all comes back to maintenance and how the engine is looked after. The first engine in my boat was an inline 6, 165. I sold that at 22 years old and it was still going well. The next engine was a 1994 4.3l and that engine is now in a friends boat, and at 17 years old is still running strong. My current 4.3MPI is a bag of shuite. Once I get it's issues sorted out I suspect it will live just as long as your 470....

I doubt many people 'hate' 470s, they are just aware of their idiosyncrasies.

Now if we want to 'hate' something, it just has to be jet skis...

LOL. One man's hate is another man's practical recognition of a situation that needs addressing . . .

I owned and operated the Shem Creek marina near Charlestion SC for many years. We had many bayliners in the racks. Some had the 470 engine. I grew to love them. You never had to worry about them falling off the travel lift. When you picked one up to take it to it's weekly trip to the repair shop the hull would conform to the forklift blades. The bottom of the boat looked like the letter 'M". Between the 470 and the OMC high ring pistons my wife always had a Cadillac and the kids never had a student loan.

Re: 470 Haters

ok ok you caught me. I'm just sh#t disturbing. I know they are a pain in the *** sometimes. (mine has been rebuilt 2 years ago also lol) But I do love it, and I do feel they can be trouble free if you are a detail minded mnt. person. It also helps if you buy it from a merc mechanic who already fixed all the quirks like I did:D

I'll take you on.... But I get to choose the time and the place... I would whip your butt... I get to 50 mph, but I can do that in just about any sea.. :D :D I guess you just play in a lake?

Here fishy fishy.

Here fishy fishy.

Ayuh,.... That is awfully important,....

In the sweetwater here in the lakes, my 4.3l in my tin barge pulls a consistent 42/ 43mph, gps...
I've drug it up to Maine to play in the Saltwater several times...
It pulls a consistent 50/ 51, gps in the Salt....

The only explanation I can come up with is,...
Saltwater is denser, so the prop bites better, 'n the hull rides higher...

I wouldn't have believed it, if I hadn't done it,... repeatedly...

I still don't believe that one ^^^^ and you know I trust your info. It just boggles the mind. You do know we don't care how fast it is on the trailer right?

Ayuh,... I hear ya QC, 'n I wouldn'ta believed it if I hadn't done it,... Repeatedly...

'course, I'd have never believed you can fill a steel tank/ barge, Thousands of gallons, with freshwater, 'n drag it anywhere ya want in the Ocean...
It Won't sink....

Btw,... The Wind Tests on my bimini was only to 'bout 80mph, on the wagon...
That's 'bout as fast as the ole Powerstroke likes ta Run....
Dragging the boat, with it's full sails up, anyways.... :)
