My 470 dropped a main bearing (thrust bearing) into the oil pan, and I had a partial seizure. I got the crank ground for new bearings, and the head rebuilt. Never got around to completing the rebuild. I still have a big pile of parts.
The 470 is very fast on top end, but all 4 cylinder I-O's just don't have much pulling power. The 4.3 is just so much smoother and is a great compromise between power and efficiency on a 17-20' boat.
I've long since moved on to a 24' pontoon boat with a Yamaha 115 hp 2 stroke. Out of 26 years' usage, it's only had the plugs replaced and the carb's cleaned a couple of times. An aluminum boat is such a good value, as they don't have the transom and stringer rot that fiberglass boats have. They last just about forever--and sell like hotcakes on the used retail market.
