Yes, I know I need to do the conversion upgrade.

The other night, I was doing some maintenance, and at one point I heard a bang from the stator area, and sure enough, I threw a magnet. I heard it get chewed up, then spit out before I could turn off the engine. Still starts, and I'm pretty sure it's still charging, but I do have a slight vibration now. Which would be from the now out of balance stator. I have a couple of questions;

My daughter's birthday party is tomorrow, and the plan was to take all the screaming 10-11 year olds tubing in the area past my canal (3 houses away). What will be worst case scenario with the out of balance stator?

As far as the conversion, couldn't I just get a 68 (or bigger) marine 3 wire amp, the bracket, and the pulley separately and do it that way? Seems the 'kits' are way over-priced because they are neatly packaged kits.

Is there anything special about doing the conversion? Seems pretty straight-forward from what I've read.

Re: 488 Stator

Just to be technically correct the magnets are in the rotor, the stator is screwed stationary to the engine. Don't know if 1 missing magnet will cause problems or not. The kits are a little expensive, but the bracket in mine (Breezeworks,low mount) was nicely engineered and there was no problem with instillation. If you make your own brackets, you do not need another pulley, use the one in the front of the rotor with a longer belt. Good luck

Remove all the magnets, you do not want that front pulley that far out of balance.

How do you get them off? Just pry them? Could I just take off the one opposite of the one that came off?

Re: 488 Stator

I'm guessing that if I remove all the magnets, I won't be charging my batteries when running. Can't do the conversion right yet. Would I be better off getting a new stator, or just removing the opposite magnet(s)?

Yeah, that would be a pretty good guess. Do you have the old magnet? If so you could try to epoxy it back in. Seems like removing a magnet on the opposite side might work, but might damage other magnets during the removal, so might be better off by adding a weight back into the space where the missing magnet is, that is if you can get a decent guess on it weight. From what I have seen a new (used) rotor is a pretty expensive. Make sure that your stator was not damaged when the magnet came off. Good luck

Re: 488 Stator

Thanks Don S i was kinda wondering on the balance of the rotor when you remove the magnets. so if a magnet falls off i should take all the magnets off or try to repair the fallen off magnet

Don S answer:If the magnet is all there, I would epoxy it back in it's original place. Get some strong epoxy, not the 5 min. stuff.
Between the glue and the magnet holding it in place it won't be a problem.

You can glue in a FULL magnet that just came loose. If the magnet is broken, remove them all or get it balanced. Don't even think about trying to glue in pieces.

fmalott, just quoting something someone said in another post doesn't mean much if you don't show what I was answering. Your thread did NOT have damaged magnets involved like this one.
