i have a early 80's model 50 horsepower mercury. i have replaced the whole electrical system from the key to the spark plugs. now i have the timing right on. i can get the motor to start in high idle. i have adjusted the primary and secondary screws form on end of the spectrum to the other and i cannot get it to idle down below 1200 rpms. here are were the questions start...

how do i get it to idle down to the 600-800 rpm area i need to shift into gear?

can the reeds go bad?

how do they go bad?

if they are bad, what things do i have to do besides remove and reinstall new ones?

are there any brand of reeds that are superior than others?

how many reeds does this motor take?

are the reeds my problem?

has anyone had similar problems and how did you fix it?

any information is helpful

thank you

Re: 50 hp mercury questions

Have you done a link & sync according to your manual? If you have then your low speed jets in the carbs may be clogged and the carbs need rebuilt.

Re: 50 hp mercury questions

ok i just checked the reeds and good news....i dont have to tear the motor apart.
they are in great shape and to the correct calibration as stated in the manual. so no i am going to put the motor back together in hopes that i just got a bug out of the system...

any info is helpful
