Also, any word on being able to solder stainless steel plug wire to the coils with a solder iron? My local source has stainless core...not copper, the latter I know will easily solder.

Anyone?

Steve,
Are those "pages" you donated to the Old OMC Site complete and in order as they appear on the site? It seems that there might be some pages missing?

Nonetheless, very good reading and informative!

I don' know, it's all I had so I passed em on.

OK

I've replaced the plug wires and soldered them to the coils...no problems.

Since I removed the coils to replace the plug wires...and didn't take note of the clearances to the magnet :-(... I need some advice of how close they should be. I was not thinking that there wouldn't be any play thus not noting the clearance...but there is. I'm guessing as close as they can get without touching??

Any advice?

Ooops, another question:

What should I apply to the solder plug wire/coil solder joint to prevent oxidation and/or corrosion?

I wrap about two thicknesses of electrical tape around the magnet then run the coils into touch the tape and tighten them down. Then carefully take the tape off. You get a perfect clearance that way. No need to cover the solder joints as the connection is all the way through and won't be affected.

I usually use a piece of a 3 X 5 file card.

3 x 5 card is about the same thickness as the two thicknesses of tape. I like the tape it works better for me. Seems with a feeler guage I get one side right and in getting the other side right I change the first side.

Thanks Guys,

I'll try both methods and see which one I like better! Thanks for responding, I new that I would get good advice!

I hope to have the beast running by tomorrow!

Still learning,

She lives and breathes!

Yup, yesterday I woke the beast. After replacing the plug wires & plugs, I still didn't have spark on the lower cylinder. Swapped condensers...still no spark! I got out my Ohm meter and checked both coils...both checked out fine! Well, what's left? Must be the points! Swapped the points...now no spark on the upper cylinder...problem isolated!

Despite having already sanded the points with 400 paper & checking the gap to 0.020...my work was obviously not good enough. So, I re-sanded, used electrical parts cleaner on them (as earlier suggested), and re-gapped the points.

With an inline spark checker (just purchased at Harbor Freight for $2.99 on sale) on the dead cylinder, my shop darkened, and a large mirror reflecting the spark plug area (I was all alone) back to me at the recoil, I pulled the recoil............drumroll please........FLASH! Hurray, I have spark! Now, it was just a matter of time.

I then mixed some more 24:1 fuel, opened the high speed jet to 3/4, opened the low speed jet all the way, pumped the primer until fuel leaked out of the low speed jet fitting, closed then reopened the low speed jet to 3/4, and gave a couple of tugs on the recoil....then magic!

The old beast started right up like a spell had been lifted and purred like a kitten...even the water pump was squirting a thin stream! Not having any children myself, I'm sure my emotions I felt were exactly the same as many proud fathers feel on the day of their child's birth...naaa you're right!

IT WAS EVEN BETTER, because this was not birth, this was resurrection from the dead after 50+ years. I think the latter trumps the former!?

OK...I'm getting carried away...let's just say that I was very proud. Thank you all for your advice and copies of manuals...pivotal!

Now off to some "sea trials" and maybe a water pump rebuild.

I'll keep you posted,

MAS
