So I got everything back together and still no spark. Took flywheel off again and meticulously looked at everything one more time. Cleaned and filed points, set gap again at .020, tightened all connections, checked for any bad wires, checked coil to boss spacing, everything checks out. Put flywheel back on and check for spark. Nothing.!!!! opened point access in flywheel and adjusted points to .018. No spark. Reset points to .022 and had weak spark across 1/8" gap. Decided that was a victory and called it a day. Is there anything I could have messed up when I had the armature plate off the motor that would affect timing? All the parts under the flywheel look brand new.

Got it running today with points set at .022. Seemed to run good except started to overheat. I am thinking there was not enough water in barrel.

Probably not. You want water up to just about and inch or two below the exhaust port. A 55 gal drum or large trash can helps, but it's always a bit of a pain trying to get enough water for these old beasts while in the front yard. Also, be sure to set your idle on the lake where the motor has proper back pressure. You can get sorta close in a tank, but the hi/lo needles should really be set on the open water, under load. Glad you got her running again. The rest will just take a bit of tweaking.

lol...sounds like you caught the "old outboard bug"! (and they do tend to multiply.....so make space somewhere for others!!!)
