Hello out there! Seen ad listed for 60's evinrude 40h. States that the lower unit selenoid doesn't work. What is this selenoid used for?

Re: 60's evinrude lu selenoid

The motor you're looking at probably has electric shift or hydro-electric shift. Either one has a solenoid that pushes something inside the lower unit that controls the clutch dog. The solenoids are no longer available new, although I saw a couple of used ones on ebay recently.
Basically, if you don't know how it works, you don't want to buy the motor. Actually, you probably don't want it either way. They can be a pain. BTW, I own one!

They also require special controls for operating those solenoids and they are getting hard to find. They were and still are good motors if parts can be found.

Thanks, yes it has electric shift. Just something I keep seeing listed on C.L. for $25.00. Knew I could get quick and sound help here. Thanks and thanks to all.

If a 1960's series 40hp, that would be a straight electric shift model. It has no solenoid but rather two electro-magnetic coils (forward & reverse) that each attract (pull) a expensive clutch spring over a hub to engage one gear or the other.

Expensive to repair........ if you're lucky enough to find the parts.

For $25 I'd buy it as a parts motor. Can't go wrong.
