i have a 1961 75 HP evinrude serial number 03158 ,model number 50927
and the previous owner disconnected some of the wiring in the helm. the #8 or #10 wire from the Gen. to the ameter is still connected , the three wires to the ignition swith are connected and the boat starts and runs. My questions are these. Where does the other end of the ammeter connect ? there is a piece of # 10 wire long enough to reach the fuse box still attached to the Batt. side of the ammeter, but not currently connected to it. Is this where the 12 volt supply for the fuse box is taken from?
The "Seloc "manual leads me to believe that the other(batt) side of the ammeter goes to the + battery . Should this be wired directly to the + battery terminal or thru/connected to the Unicharger control box in some fashion ? next question : Where exactly does the tachometer (Sun super tach II) wire in ? i know which wire is which on the tach., but i dont know where to connect the blue tach. pickup wire to the motor ? jerome

Wish I could help you with the tach, but '61 is a few years before my time and I wouldn't want to give you bogus info.

thanks gaugeguy, so let me see if i have this right. connect the gen side of the ammeter to the gen of the motor and the batt side to the positive battery terminal. maybe i am having a brain cramp(or worse)but i am not seeing how the ammeter will indicate what is happening load wise if i dont connect it thru the fuse box. now i don't know what i even mean to say.but i'm posting this anyway in the hope that somebody can tell me what i tried to say.

i really need to go fishing.

I think the tach wire goes to the emergency shutoff that sits on the side of the engine. One of the wires of the points goes there and that would be the power source. The other wire should be grounded to the engine.
This is the way it works on the smaller fifties and early sixties.
So that would be my guess.
Field and armature go from the generator to the fuse box.Field goes through a 4 amp fuse and armature has no fuse on its way to the regulator. From here B goes to a 20 amp fuse and then on to the ammometer and from there straight into the nearest plus wire.
Do not forget to polarize your generator.
Good Luck.

Thanks rolmops,
Does the generator need to be polarized whenever the wires are disconnected or only if it was repaired/replaced ?

The book says only when you replace it with another.
