Big project there and you've got a good start. Looking forward to seeing what your plans are for the rig.

Love the photo of Jack poking his head.

That foam being gone will probably make the boat much lighter if it was waterlogged. Good luck:D

Re: Well I did it now!

Ok, I understand the roll and tip now and have no idea how good I am at it. I don't know how to spray either:(. But I may go buy a gun at HF and see if I can screw it up really good.

Yea Jack if way cool, he would help me if he could. He tried to play with the pieces of foam but I would not let him as I did not want to clean it up.

Actually the only water logged foam was just a few pieces in the bow and a small one right in front of the engine and it was actually dry:D. It was just rotten at this point. Boat has not been wet since 2006 and was under a carport until I bought it.:)

Kelly, i'm with you on the cold. i was planning on washing my gimbal housing bits and tracing the template for Alpha 1-sized hole onto transom yesterday, but the 40 degrees with 30mph wind and dust storm convinced me to go through some of the reels instead.....

which makes it even more impressive that you've taken the bull by the horns already..........you go dude!

Re: Well I did it now!

Several questons for you guys that have experience with these old tin cans and anyone who has any good ideas as well.
1. What grit sandpaper do you use on the old paint and even the skin when needed? Am starting to clean her up on the inside and the paint in there really sucks. I have been using 80 grit for now since it will not be seen to much, but wanted to know if that was to rough or not.
2. Has anyone ever removed a rib from their and then reinstalled it:eek:? While scraping the gunk off the inside before pressure washing I have found what looks like corrosion under edges of the ribs:facepalm:.
3. Anyone have a good place to get a pnuematic riveter for solid rivets? I may need it to tighten any loose one and will need it for sure if I remove any ribs.
4. Under the side panels she has old vinyl glued right to the skin. And sandpaper does want to take it off and it is not really wanted to scrape off either. Any suggestions on getting that old glue off? Really don't want to wire brush that much hull if I don't have to.

I am sure that I will come up with more as I go and it is slow going. No pics as of right now cause the wife cannot find the charger for the my DSLR camera:(, she is giving me dirty looks right now cause I am telling on her:D.

The carpet that was in the bow was an old foam back that was glued in, well with one tug it came right out:), but a lot of the foam back was still glued in place. Well all that foam backing is now gone, wire wheel and die grinder works wonders. There is paint under the glued in carpet as well and have got most of the glue off and a lot down to bare alum due to trying to get the glue off and also due to different thickness of paint on the inside:facepalm:, what a messy job they did.

Re: Well I did it now!

1. I have found that 80 to 100 is a good start for removing material. 120 to 220 to smooth things out for paint.

2. Removing a rib, oh boy. Starting to get scary! I do not recall reading where anyone has done that. I suppose if you are up for the challenge we are really just talking bucking rivets to get it back in. Before you go to all theat trouble you may want to be sure that step is necessary. Post up some photos so we can check out what you are alookin at, eh.

3. I got nuttin.

4. Wire wheel on the grinder did well with removing my glue. I think some guys have used chemical stripper too.

I too have received dirty looks from my bride. Maybe only once though as I remember:rolleyes::rolleyes::eek:

Sounds like progress Kelly!

Have fun!

Hey Kelly when you are all done with the project you need to write a BOOK there is a lot of humor with this process and you seem to handle it well. Good luck pugetsound

Like what choice do I have to handle it any other way though. It is either take it as it comes or junk the boat and I really don't want to do that. I live and learn and have always been a student of hard knocks that is for sure.

Re: Well I did it now!

Hey Jason I was hoping that someone would chime in for me.

1. Well at least I started out right, will get some finer stuff when ready to do more sanding. Am thinking that it would be a whole lot easier to spray in the bow instead of rolling but have never used a sprayer before:facepalm:.

2. Yea I was thinking that removing the rib could be scary as well and that is why I asked. Wife still trying to find the charger since she is the last one that used it:eek: and then I can get pics. Will be able to get some close ones with the 300mm macro lens. I just saw whitish/reddish spots when I was scraping with a putty knife. I also have to figure out how to clean out the limber holes as they are all plugged.

3. I am hoping DJ stops by here as I think he has some ideas about the air gun and bits:).

4.Yea I was afraid of the wire wheel as there is a ton of that junk to remove but if that is what it takes then so be it:(.

Thanks for all your input buddy. I am trying to get going on this rig so that I can try and get it floated this summer before fall salmon season. :D

Re: Well I did it now!

Naw Kelly, I ain't dead...just busy. Ok my friend here is my 2 cents:
DO NOT remove the rib just because you see some stain. That could be from an old hook, screw or whatever. Clean around all the rivets and seams real well, most guys use vinegar and water, and the gluvit it all. The limber holes are cleaned out by any means but usually we use a sawsall blade. Anything will do to remove debris but keep in mind you have to clean, flush, clean, flush...and even clean, flush. Sometime I put water pressure at the top of the ribs and even more carp came out.
Go to HF and buy an air riveter:D it makes a big difference when you have as many rivets as I had/have. Minor probs with the riveter, but hey its cheap. Any sanding/grinding you do is removing the aluminum, so keep it at its minimum. I, like you and many others, try to find an easy way to sand etc. but my friend we sometimes have to bit the bullet and just do it. Hard and tedious work? OH Heck yes, but its gotta be done. Good Luck and keep the pics coming...and don't stop..it will get done.

This thing is a freaking mess, am working on cleaning it up now.

Was using a wide putty knife to scrape with but it was not working to well. Went to a 2 wide putty knife and it worked pretty well. Next will be to break out the pressure washer and see what I can do with that.

Re: Well I did it now!

Started doing lite sanding as you can see here. PO did not do a very good job with previous paint and then it had carpet glue over it.
DSC_0113.jpg

Most glue and foam carpet backing gone now as well.
DSC_0112.jpg

Right side of boat by lower window, it is leaking where the top connect to bow cover.
DSC_0116-1.jpg

And leaking on the left side as well, probably worse as the wood attached to the bracket was completely rotted away.

Re: Well I did it now!

Here is a spot under the rib before I started getting all the built up gunk off.
DSC_0108-1.jpg

Here is a spot that you can see a spot under the rib that looks corroded and that there is also some pitting in the bottom of the boat. Could not see all this until I got the gunk cleaned off somewhat.
DSC_0098-1.jpg

This is why I was worried about it fshngho. I think that the old feller that sold me that boat saw me coming and said SUCKER on the way ma.
Yea all the limber? holes are blocked from what I could see:mad:. Will have to break out a blade or something to see if I can start getting them cleaned out. Will see how well a 2500 psi pressure washer does with it as well. Just wish I had hot water to hook up the pressure washer, think that would help a lot but not sure.

Re: Well I did it now!

Any way you could get your hands on a portable steam cleaner.. Rent all place or something like that. Steam will remove a lot of crud. Without all the PSI pressure on the hull. Just a thought don't know if it will work ,but mabey worth a try. Pugetsound

Re: Well I did it now!

So, do I need to worry about that pitting that is in the bottom? Would really suck to have the sucker spring a leak:eek:. I am going to try to pressure wash it first as I already have one of those, if that does not work to well then will check into a steam cleaner if I can find one. But hey I am making headway on this baby finally. Just wish that it fit in the garage so I could do the glovit inside.

Just what epoxy do I need to use for the wood anyway? I know a lot of peeps have ordered from USCOMPOSITES but it seems that there are a ton of different things to order there. And any idea how much I would need to do the floor and the side panels?

I also need to figure out what size of rivets I need for the floor and all the stuff that I took apart and get some ordered. And also get a pneumatic riveter from HF like fshngho said he got.

Here is the exact package that I ordered...

Yes, get the pumps too.

Transom, stringer meat plus I'll be able to finish the deck, plus I should be able to finish my seat boxes, and maybe my side panels too (maybe). All generous amounts of epoxy.

Yah, hit that hull with a pressure washer like EZ says there and see what she looks like. Sounds like a plan!

Hey, she may be a mess but you'll make here purdy!:)

Re: Well I did it now! 76 Islander rebuild

Thanks Jason, that is exactly what I was looking for bud. Now I know what to order and can start getting stuff sent so when it is warm enough I can start work:D. Glad you said something about the pumps as well, I would have spaced that out:facepalm:.

Yea I am hoping that the pressure washer will do a good enough job, plenty of pressure I think. Will have to do some wire brushing I know as there is some stuff on the bottom in a few places that is as hard as concrete.
