Re: Well I did it now!

Kelly those colors go well together, just like University of Michigan's maize and blue. I'm a MSU grad myself though:D

What brand of paint is that?

That shade of yellow is about perfect for what the stripe on my SS should be. Like a Goldenrod or Sunset yellow, that's what Roslynn calls it anyway.:)

Well we have all talked about the paint to use is rusto. The yellow is rusto safety yellow

Looks like paint removal is going well. I still need to read up on your thread. I'm never in the Starcraft section it seems...

The colors go together, but I'm a big MSU fan like Huron so maybe try green and white? ;) It is your boat though and it should fit it nicely! :D Keep up the great work!

Are you a "Duck" fan Kelly? green and yellow maybe???:D

I actually thought of using green, but currently own a gallon of the blue and white and a half gallon of the yellow. Wife said that is what color it is going to be, until she changes her mind anyway:facepalm:.

Well this is going to blow most of you away, but I don't really care for sports at all. Don't watch em or go to games unless I am playing which is not going to happen anymore anyway. I used to hunt and do shooting sports in my spare time and most of that has gone the way side as well. So most of my spare time is either fishing, spending time with the wife or working on the boat when weather permits.

Hey thanks for the shout out there Mike, it is appreciated. I will figure something out one way or another.

Hey Jason, thanks for the heads up there bud. My only problem with doing it your way (very good idea) is that I don't have 2 trees in my yard to do it with. I already thought of how you did it bud but just don't have the timber for it.

Not up there currently.:(....only 760+ miles away though.

I knew you were a long ways away Deadwood, but did not think it was that far though. I am going to have to come down that way one of these days just so I can say hello and see the area.

I will get it one way or another guys, just not sure how yet. Actually thought of hooking a strap to the tree in the yard and the transom and pulling it off the trailer very slowly. Then I though how am I going to get it back onto the trailer after that. I do have an electric winch on the trailer but am affraid that I would damage:eek: the bottom of the boat while trying to winch it back onto the trailer. So am going to have to figure something else out.

By all means!
Winchester Bay ain't 760+ but "near Yosemite" is and that's where work is. Someday Winbay all the time....;)
You're welcome at either.

I actually ended up running 4x4's across the ceiling joists in my garage and hooked up a lifting system to get the big girl tipped for sanding/paint. Have ya got room in the garage?

Re: Well I did it now!

Fun challenge, this is what I would try......

Is the boat totaly stripped with the cap off?? If so it should'nt be that heavy. Screw some 1"x2" across the open part of the boat to keep it from flexing (3 or 4 should do). Drop it off off the trailer and on the ground, use 2 block and tackles or just two rope pulleys, one to pull it over, and one to hold it from flipping to fast. You might need to block one side to keep in place while the flip is going on. Even if you just get up on one side you could do 1/2 first then the other while its on its side or tilted at 45 degrees even, not sure its neccessary to flip it all the way over (could probly tiltit far enough even w/ the cap on.

Hey tgp, thanks for stopping by bud. The cap is still on the boat, really don't think that it is going to come off at this point in time. Things might change but I really don't think so. I was worried about pulling it off the trailer and onto the ground, then I was worried about doing damage to it when I winch it back onto the trailer. If I get it off of the trailer I think that I could easily get to the bottom by just tilting it on the sides without having to really rolling it over. Just as you said, and it should be easy enough to do. Just worried about the damage I might cause to the boat. Has anyone pulled a boat off of a trailer like I was talking about? And then winching it back on and dragging the hull on the ground till it is on the trailer enough to support it sounds not so good.

Re: Well I did it now!

Kelley Can you not loosen the strap back up and stop letting the boat go back a ways on the trailer. I do this with my 22 Holiday Put Arden boxs (old milk boxs) under each corner then work the boat back till it sits on the box then carefully drive out from under it and set a box or two under the front as you do this Then you can Use Stand jacks a few tweeks at a toie where the boxs are to raise it a bit more. Now you can redo the hull and finish all but where the stands are then move them a bit and finish the hull. If you do this right it will work BUT always leave support under the boat to catch it if something slips so it wont drop on you. I droped the 16 on my lower back a few weeks ago and it was not fun. Im a Lucky so-. as I recovered well. Sold my 16 SS as I stated earlier and still see boats priced about where i wanted to sell mine. Aboiut 2800 to 3000. The world is full of ( Pardon the expression ) Bottom feeders with our economy and the boating industry is getting hit real hard. Your project is looking good so far. enjoy Summer wherever it is. at least were not up to are waist in water or getting blown away. Ed

Re: Well I did it now!

Ed's suggestion is excellent for getting the boat off and on the trailer. You can use old flotation, PFDs bales of ha..Anything to support it as you slowly jack her up, supporting it as you inch the trailer away. You can attach the stern to a tree, another viehicle or a neighbors fence post.

Another option is to call the local HS foot ball coach and offer a small donation in return for the help of a few young lads and just flip on bales of hay. Just contact the same ones to flip it back and gently pick it up and put it back on the trailer. 10 Minutes tops!

I'd be right there if you were closer.

Re: Well I did it now!

Thanks for the ideas Ed, and I like the idea of the milk crates that you mention. I will have to see if I can pick any up somewhere. As for the water, I am glad that I do not live right on the river now. The last I heard the Columbia is at 16'8" and 16 feet is flood stage. Here is a pic of the boat ramp that is just a couple of blocks from me, the red line is where the water usually is at the docks.

100_0450.jpg

As you can see from the water line it was almost to the road, the tide was going out at this time. So it is high, I have not seen it this high since I have been here in Oregon.

I agree with you Mike that ed's suggestion is a good one, I may give it a try. The only problem that I am having is that the yard and driveway where I live have a pretty good slant to them, enough that Jack plays ball by himself and has to run to catch the ball. The other part of the issue is that it is only part concrete and that is going to make it hard to move things around. I am going to figure something out though when I need to. I really don't need to flip it, just get it off the trailer and I will one way or another bud.

Re: Well I did it now!

Well with the glovit down I am thinking that now is a good time to make some patches for all the corroded spots in the hull. Here is a piece of aluminum that I got from a buddy. Any guesses as to what it is? Hint, you see one every day when you drive somewhere. It is white with a black border and letter and numbers:D.

I made 12 patches with it and another sign that my buddy gave me.

I have no idea what your talking about.:D
I'm about to do the same thing. Hold the patches in with 5200 then fill with marine tex. Is that your plan?
I'm off to strip some paint!

Hahahahaha no idea my foot:D. I did get them all legal like though, there were going to be scrapped out. He works for a concrete place and they are doing tons in a nearby town and the signs are being replaced. The patches will be on the inside of the hull so don't think I will need to use the marine tex on them, but will use the 5200 and maybe some rivets as well.

Here is the one that I used to start with, it is much smaller than the other one but did get 6 patches out of it.

I know that one of our iboat brothers out there has an I/O that put a big aluminum patch on his transome and riveted it in place. Does anyone know who it was by any chance? I would like to look at the pics again but I can't remember who it was and there are a lot of posts to go through to find it. I did do some searching but dang that is a ton of searching and have not found it yet.

Re: Well I did it now!

Got up yesterday and decided to unwrap the tin tub once again. I happen to have 4 stinger with balls on them and used them to hold the tarp up on the boat so I don't have to completely remove the tarp and keep it out of the way.

100_0465.jpg

Man that paint is just fugly and nasty I think. So am thinking that there just might be something shinny under that ugly paint.

100_0467.jpg

After all day of scrubbing and washing and scrubbing and more washing.

100_0468.jpg

Man my back was killing me after doing this all freaking day, but have most of the paint removed from the visible parts of the boat. Well sides and back that is, still need to do the upper deck and all of that. Then I am going to get to the bottom sooner or later, the bottom is going to stay bare I do believe.

Re: Well I did it now!

You know those stingers I told you about. Had an issue with one that was holding the trap down. It was a stinger with a 4 inch drop with a 2 5/16 ball on it. Got a sudden gust of wind and I heard the tarp kind of snap like it does when the wind whips a flag. Well the next thing I know I am talking to these guys:facepalm:.

Yea I am not going to be doing a whole lot today that is for sure. Had a goose egg on the back of my head the size of a softball, it is mostly gone today. Doc said that I had a mild concussion and not to over exert myself for a couple of days. LOL....we will see how it goes today, but it is raining right now so not sure I will be out there anyway.

Hope you all have a very good weekend guys, and may all the fathers out there have a very good and safe weekend, HAPPY FATHERS DAY in advance as I will be working and not sure I will be able to get online the way things have been going at work lately.
