Re: Well I did it now!

Here is a pic to define where the cracks in the above post are. I think that once the wood is replaced and the support is back that there should not be any more problems with the cracks. Just want to nip it in the butt so they don't spread.

Re: Well I did it now!

Here's a thought on those cracks. If you can't clean it and have it welded I'd drill a small hole in the very end of the crack then fill and fair everything with JB.

My windshield was a chore to get out mainy because of the sticky neoprene tape around the top and sides. I'll have to make some new T-nuts because I snapped some off. I wouldn't loose those or the gasket as I'm striking out so far finding anything on my windshield. Its A Taylor Made 440244. FWIW

Your really going to town on that bow! Planning to take the top windshield off?

Your efforts to clean up and properly seal that window are worthwhile. My friend and forum member Tim Fives is currently having a heck of a time getting that window sealed on his '91 Islander.

That is what I was thinking on those cracks Mike, just wanted to make sure I was thinking right on them. I was thinking that the JB would hold better for the cracks than most anything else other than welding. As for the tnuts you are talking about, the ones on the bottom of the window? If those are the ones you are talking about, I had to cut mine off as I could not get them undone. I am going to see about either a carriage bolt or something similar and then just cut 2 sides of the heads off so that they will go into the slot. I really would like to find something for a new gasket though, that one just sucks and I don't think it would be good to put back in. The top windshield, well I was not even going to take this one out but did and will probably take it off as well. I can see that it needs a new seal under it as well.

Thanks Ez, I was sitting there looking at it and just could not stand the idea of new paint and stuff inside and that stupid thing leaking. If I figure anything out that will work I will let you know and pass it on to Tim Fives so he can get his to seal.

Yes those t-bolts on the bottom of the windshield are ones I mean. I have some stainless 1/4-20 phillips pan heads that I'll experiment with. If it works I'd be happy to send some to you. My seal seems usable but will probably sillycone it in place. I'm interested to see what you come up with.
Since you have the cap off are you going to replace the wooden supports?

I used a roll of Pick Up Canopy seal strip laid it down then installed the windshield . No leaks and no messy seam sealeat. Should work for Tim Fives windshield. You can find the bolt holes from underneath with a wire then mark with a majic marher. compress the windshield when it installs and cut off the excess with a razor cutter.

Re: Well I did it now!

Yea I think that we will have to make our own t-bolts cause I have no idea where to find some if they even exist any more. I think that my seal would be usable as well but will use some 4200 with it or if I am able to find any thing else. If I do find anything else I will let you and everyone else know. As for the wooden supports, I am going to remove them and check them. I was checking them yesterday and they seem good and solid but you never know about the bottom side. I still have a little mahogany wood left from the front support that had to be replaced. If they are still good then I am going to seal them up with epoxy and put them back in.

That is a good idea there Puget, I will have to find some and see how it goes. I do like that idea though and should be easy enough to do.

Also Mike, all those little screws that go around the window that hold it in. There were only 6 that came out in one piece:(, all the rest were twisted right off:eek:. It seems that every screw I touch on this old girl I have to replace. And everyone that is replaced will be replaced with a stainless steel one so I don't have problems later down the road.

T
I have a corrosioin hole in the outdrive hole in the transome. I was going to try and get it welded up but was thinking that would be PITA. So I thought I would maybe add a plate of aluminum over part of the transome by either rivet or welded, not sure which. Below is a pic that I played with and kind of gives an idea what I am thinking. The red is where the hole is and would be covered by the plate which is the white part. What do you all think of the idea?

I know someone riveted a plate on thier transom but I cannot remember who it was that did it.

Right here Kelly by Alpheus starting on page 9 http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=450122&page=9

Haven't seen him on the board much lately.

Hey Kelly - On your T-bolts, have you tried any boat dealers? New boats are using the same windshield style and they don't seem to change methods over the years unless there is a cheaper way. Just a thought.

I got that far on his posts, but never saw a pic of the finished product and how it turned out. I was wondering how it turned out after putting the wood in the transom. Yea have not seen him around a lot lately either, probably busy having fun boating and such.

I have not tried a boat dealer as of yet. I was thinking about it for the seal to see if they would maybe have something like that around. I just really hate the idea of buying anything from a boat dealer is all, they jack prices so freaking much and it ircks the heck out of me.

Thanks for stopping by GA_Boater and for the link. I will take any suggestions that come along and check them out, they are always appreciated if I use them or not.

OK, I think I'll be all right now. I was just hyperventilating some.

I think Michael is on to something here for those cracks.

Your bow most wood structure looks in better shape than what mine were. I pulled em out and made one one big piece out of plywood instead.

I also ran a fillett of PL on te upper cabin structure rather than replace that chincy foam. It really firmed/strengthened things up. You can see here on the second board in...

Might even help with your cracks a little anyway.

Cheers buddy!

Well just when I was prepared to give you a big ol hug there buddy. Yea I think Mike was onto something about the cracks as well, so I may just give that a shot. Yea the foremost wood is in pretty good shape but the one that was under the window was totally rotted out with one end missing completely. I did not have any of the foam on top of the boards at all. I was going to go out and work on it again today but as usual it is raining again.

Ok, I am asking a stupid question. What is PL?

I'll still take it bro! My eyes are still a little watery from being so upset.

HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGSSSSSSSSSSS there buddy, hope that helps ya out. But take it easy and I don't think I am through taking things apart just yet:D.

http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/pl_...n-Adhesive.htm

I love the stuff. I prolly have equal parts aluminum/epoxy/flotation/PL in my boat

Way cool bud, I am going to get some myself and maybe just do as you did with it on the support boards. I need to do something like that to help with the support.

Thanks for the info Jason, it is appreciated very much.

Well here is how my transom was looking before I did anything to it. I have not done a lot today but did work on this for a while.

100_0495.jpg

Here is same transom with some grinding work done and the patch that I made just sitting in place.

100_0497.jpg

I think that I messed up though and should have brought the patch down lower below the keyhole cut out. Am thinking that I am going to get another piece of aluminum and make another patch.

Yah, might not be a bad idea. Your gimbal housing might extend past the bottom side there, then you'd end up dealing with all sorts of installation/water leakage issues. Neither would be a whole lot of fun, eh.

Actually I took some measurements and it will fit with half an inch to spare. I just don't like it being that close is all. So still thinking that I am going to make another one.

Shoot dude, I'd run with it then! Good Lord knows you have enough to do on this Islander (as I am looking at the bow side of your rig).

Have a great weekend Kelly:)
