Hey there all, i went through the carbs on my 68 evinrude [55] 2 stroke [3 cylinders] and cleaned all of the jets, checked hoses, float adjusments  etc. this beast still will not keep running, the plugs look in excellent condtion and i have checked spark and there is spark, I am wondering maybe I should check the quality of spark I am getting? It wants to start i can, but won't continue running for long with out starter motor engaged. meaning it really dosent run! [although I am getting exaust fumes, while turning motor with starter engaged] Maybe I should pull the flywheel and check the points, and or check the compression. I am so close to just buying a new motor I cannot even tell ya. To clarify, I mixed the gas and oil at 50-1 omc oil, tried it 1st with chock closed, then at 1/4 and 1/2 open. better results with chock 1/2 open and throttle arm pushed forward to just before it stops starter from working. Looking for ideas on what to check next as well? [last my manual will finally show up on wed] whew!

Check the compression first,Denny. I got a bad feeling about the compression numbers you'll find.
If the compression is within spec, check the fuel pump next.
If the fuel pump is pumping, check the timing.
And yes,I would would pull the flywheel and check the points.

Hey all & especially 12 footer, I pulled the plugs on this bad boy and [da] I found the 2nd plug down loose by a couple of turns. So I will check the compression, check the spark on all plugs instead of just the top one and change the oil in the leg and retry. I think sometimes I should have my head examined before I look at the motor. Anyway's thanks 12 footer, I will go through the checks you suggested. Denny
