Re: '68 Holiday-V 120 Mercruiser I/O

If it were my motor I would drown the thing in ATF.
Let it sit for a day and try to turn it over by hand.
Drown it again and let it sit again.
Once it is freed up I would run the motor with ATF in the crank case.
I would put some ATF in a small fuel tank at 50 gas to 1 ATF.
Perhaps run it for 15 to 20 minutes.
After the clean out I would change filter and oil.
If the lifters and valves are still sticking I would do it again.

(Ed I was referring to ATF in the motor. Hope you a healing up buddy)
(Barato never head of mixing ATF and Acetone but it sound like a good idea)

Re: '68 Holiday-V 120 Mercruiser I/O

thanks for the great advice, unfortunately one of the valves is stuck all the way open due to me taping it with a socket and hammer (light taps)
I'm taking it to a friend that has the knowledge to see what's what, He will look at it with in the next 2 weeks of so...

Scott--

unless you mean that it's stuck open due to valve stem being bent, this doesn't change anything....you still just need to "ungum" the motor first, and then decide whether head needs to come off etc. you might be pleasantly surprised.

As an owner of 1968 Holiday I/O - I would say this.....wrestling with an old motor can be costly.....I would be on the hunt for a transplant. I found in short order a 3.0 Liter that had a crack in the water jacket - I fixed it with JB and it has run perfect - price $375. Plus I got the 20 extra horses.

Around here in WNY 3.0's from rotten glassers pretty much go for 300-500 bucks....done and done.

Your boat is EXACTLY what mine once was.....pretty cool

And you wont know that unless you give the ATF or lube of your choice a shot

I'm just going to have the head removed.

If i crank the engine with the stuck valve pushed all the way down (spring is completely compressed), the piston will get damaged and or bend the valve.

Once again thanks for your suggestions

Removable of the head a wise move then you can do a lot of things before it is replaced .

Re: '68 Holiday-V 120 Mercruiser I/O

Well I went to look at my boat today as I was in the area, The head has been removed and the valves and will need to be replaced. There was a little rust in cyl #4 but after cleaning it up it should be ok.
Stern drive is off and it in pretty good shape :D The Yoke Assembly had been immersed in water so they are shot. According to my Friend that is ;)

Sorry no photo's I don't have a camera on my phone, as I work in sensitive area's in the automotive industry...

Re: '68 Holiday-V 120 Mercruiser I/O

Hi, hope I'm not to late, to me the valves would only need to be replaced if they're damaged, bent or heads/faces badly damaged. Can usually remove, clean them up. A Basic "valve" job would be to either KNURL or install new guides, reface the head side of the valves, ( 3 or 4 angle valve job ) I would also think about having hardened seats installed, as you probably can't get any leaded gas or additive (illegal in US) to help protect the exh valve seats.

As a side note I had a 120hp '67 Merc bored .030 over size, compl valve job, CompCams 260H ( shoulda gone for the 240H ( more like the marine ) New Intake and carb, thing ran beautiful !!! was in a non-tin boat. '67 Glastron V-174 ( which the Bat Boat was based on cept the Bat boat had the BUICK V6 )

Yikes!

Well Scott, I have to say, you took that pretty well.

I would have thrown a big tantrum!

I am sure you'll be feeling pretty confident on the water though, eh!

Cheers!:D

Welcome to the World of Boat Ownership,
The good news is you shouldn't have to worry about the motor next summer! You can concentrate on the boat resto with one thing off your mind.

I would rather spend the $$ than me mess something up and have the boat brake down in the middle of Lake Huron or Erie and have to deal with the "ball and chain' chewing my ear off :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

A piece of mind is worth something. Bad things can happen offshore in the Great Lakes. I really hate "I told you so".

All the innards are up to snuff now. Better to do it now than when each component is a problem later.

Nice work. Just checked out the new gas tank :)

We're getting closer every day.
