Re: 69 evinrude 18 hp no forward motion.

Ok so it was a gasket sealer made by BRP or whatevaa.LOL.

I mounted the evrything back togethere and i totally dunced it. I used the triple gaurd grease for the top of the crankshaft splines instead of the moly lube that came with it.
IS this OK????

started it up and ran for like 45 seconds with no water coming out , thought i blew and messed up then all of a sudden it just starts shooting water. YAH YAH!!!!:D:):D:)

Of course I now have a new question .When i finally got it up and running it is only holding a Idle in full throttle. Actually after it warmed up it held idle in a little less than full throttle. It has always kind of ran this way. read somewhere that these old e-rudes dont idle all that great.(or just rumor???)
my questin is how should i start diagnosing this.
( iam turning to the manual now but thought you guys might have some insight)

Also i am running the motor in a bucket and i want to check to see if the shear pin corrected the problem as to why the motor wouldnt go in forward. do i just click it in gear at low throttle/idle (if possible)in the bucket?????

Thanks ,there is no way this project would be near complete if it wasn't for this forum. Much respect to all those who contribute around here.

my 64 evinrude 18 purrs like a kitten...........sounds like you may need to clean/rebuild the carb....or adjust it.

theres a bunch of info in the faqs---- where to start troubleshooting lots of maintenance tips, how to clean and set your carbs,etc...

Old evinrudes don't idle well??? How OLD? :) Anyway, 50's and 60's 18 hp evinrudes idle GREAT to me. You should check your gears where the tiller swivels and where they go vertical and make sure they are meshing in the right place. there's a flat tooth where the tiller handle swivels so it'll be obvious where they should be. The other gears should start in the first tooth when it is in the stop position (as far as you can turn the throttle toward the stop position. Next, check that the throttle plate in the back of the carb (not the choke plate in front) barely starts to open when the throttle cam roller goes past the 2 marks on the cam. I don't even remember there being an adjustment other than the screws that hold the throttle cam to the armature plate but sometimes the roller arm and linkages get bent for who knows why. Have you set your idle adjustment yet? If not, check the FAQ's forum and look at Joe Reeves carb. adjustment instructions. If you have good spark, an clean carb., and these things mentioned above are adjusted properly, it will idle nicely.
Wait and check your gears on a boat. Your liable to break your shear pin doing it in a bucket.
Just some ideas,
JBJ

And make sure the bucket is big enough to submerge the water pump when testing. That's probably why it took 45 seconds to pump.... It should be a lot faster... maybe 10 seconds or so...
