Recieved a quote from a local marine repair shop and they quoted $700 to rebuild my 1998 Ocean Pro Johnson 150 V6 due to varnish build up. Does that sound right or am I getting the shaft?

Carbs, 6 to be exact, $160 just in the carb kits, dissassemble 6 carbs, clean and reassemble with new kits, sync everything up @ $95/hr @ 5 hrs is $475 + tax, seems about right to me.

Or do it yourself for the cost of the kits.

$160 for the kits, they get at wholesale for probably 1/2 that. 5 hours @ $95 seems a little heavy. Could be getting hosed, or what the market will bear. Probably would have been cheaper 2 months ago when they were looking for work. Rick

Re: $700 to rebuild Carb!!

Agreed but marina's are in it to make money, I bought a $20 OMC tank up in the Muskoka's for $85 2 summers ago. Maybe he can get F_R to do it @ $10 / hour, I remember him mentioning his labour rate in the day. Think $95 an hour is bad, go price out an oil change on a Ferrari. Paying a marina to do lower unit oil and fog the motor for winter is like $200. People pay $200+ dollars to shrink wrap their boats every season!!!Yes it's crazy in terms of the "do it your selfers", I'd never pay anyone $700 to work on my v-4 but if I had the cash and really didn't want to bother doing it I'd pay even more just to avoid buying the tools, manuals , the time and the risk of messing something up if I had a fear of doing it myself.

That price is just crazy:eek:,if i were you I'd do them myself.IMO it is very easy to do,I did mine myself without having any prior experience with carburetors.I also helped a friend with his and neither one of us has had a problem due to the carburetors.get yourself a manual it will help alot.

Hope this helps?

I did my V6 last yr, buy the carb kits here on iBoats, I think they were $22 each and it took less than 2 hrs, very simple even the first time round.
Its more difficult removing the carb than the actual "rebuild".
Get the manual.

Yup bottom line, if you want to save yourself a pile of cash, get a manual, some tools and the kits.

Yea, I was just reading shop rates at my local marina today too. $96 an hour. Holy gads! Things have really gotten expensive:eek:

So I guess my $95 assumption wasn't far off the going rate. That's why when people get an estimate on what it costs to do any amount of work they fall off their chair. I was talking Ferrari, a buddy of my dads has a Testerossa, in order to get the oil changed Ferrari of Montreal brings a flatbed to his house, bring it to Montreal, do the change and then bring the car back with a bill for $2000. It's one of those "you gotta pay to play" type things and the marina's know it.

If you can afford a Testarossa, you can afford the oil change. Rick

Re: $700 to rebuild Carb!!

Like others have said, do it yourself. The tools needed are actually minimal, and the kits come with everything you need other than some carb cleaner. I did my carbs last year and couldn't believe how easy it was. I did the grunt work, but then brought it to the shop for a link and sync because they have the test tanks and weighted test props.

I got the best of both worlds the way I did it...saved a bunch of money, and had the fine tuning stuff done by a pro.

OUCH.... I charge $180 to clean and set OMC V-6 carbs.. any parts needed are extra... Not hard.. doesn't take that long.. you will need some professional carb cleaner ..usually comes in 5 gal. with a basket.. DO NOT put ANY GASKETS/O-RINGS/PLASTIC/etc..etc.. in this cleaner.. they will be usless afterwards if you do!!!!

Use ONLY factory (OEM) parts!!!!!!!!!

about a 3-4 hr job...

.. YOU are getting VARNISHED!

Re: $700 to rebuild Carb!!

It wasn't much.....I think it was only an hour labour, and they did a couple other small things too.

I had it done at Dundas Marine on Hwy 5. I've been in there a couple times and like them a lot.
