I have a model E70ELCTE and need to know what year the motor is. Also its been sitting awhile but is said to have less than 40 hours on it. What do I need to do to get it back in service? Is it necessary to have the Impeller serviced?

G'Day. Your motor was built in 1983. Definatly replace the water pump. Change the lower unit oil, replace the spark plugs. You will probebly need to strip and clean the carbys too.

Good Morning DT,
Just to let you know I have the same engine.I just bought the boat with this motor on it and so far its a good running motor. I have changed the waterpump(it took me a few times to get it right.)I also, just this past week did a decarb, changed the plugs and also installed a new fuel pump. It's running even better then when I bought it! Good luck and don't be afraid to ask for help!

I was told that its hard to find parts for evinrude motors these days and that they were bought out by another company. That being said do you happen to know the part number of the water pump kit? Also on the carbs do you have a kit or part number for that too?

Both parts are made by OMC. The decarb kit is just a can of spray ( $ 7.00 ).
Here is how it works. Start the engine and let it warm up ( using the old plugs ) rev the engine up and spray the can into each carb for about 10 seconds each. The engine will smoke like **** . when half or all of the can is gone shut the engine down. Let it cool for about and hour. Start it back up and rev up it will probably still smoke like heck. Change the plugs.
As far as the fuel pump #, I'll have to get back to you on that. They should have at your local marina. That is also made by OMC. I bought the whole pump ( $50.00 ) itself and it is only 2 screws and reconnecting the fuel lines. I really noticed this past week that I'm getting more out of a tank of gas than before!
Good luck!

Hello to the 83 Evinrude owners!
I have the 50 hp model. Mine sat for 4 years. The carbs were heavily gummed. As were the spark plug wires.
Also, at first it seemed like there was a lot of electrical problems. In reality, there weren't, I just needed to remove a lot of connections, clean them and put 'em back together.
Also, get a manual. Very helpful, both in confidence and knowing which part goes where. ;)

Good idea to replace the impellar. One trouble that I had was making sure the water tube fits in the impellar housing when replacing the lower unit. That is the tube closest to you that goes up into the powerhead. The tube is wiggly and loose, so it's easy to miss.

The biggest thing (IMHO) is to make sure all the gummed up, nasty old gas is out of it - through-out the fuel system.

GOOD LUCK ! !

Jason
