70hp Tilt Trim issues

Hi guys,

I have a 87' 70hp evinrude, E70TLCDC

For about 4 months now the trim/tilt has been making a rough (screeching) noise wenever it goes up or down in any position. At random times it would sound normal, but most of the time it would screetch. It always operated 100% though. As of yesterday it won't trim up when under power, it still does everything else fine and will trim up fine when not under power.

So, today I drained some of the fluid. I pulled the line off the bottom and opened up the fill plug and cycles it a few times. I think I got about a pint of trans fluid. It all looked like new with no water at all.

Any suggestions on what my problem is? I'm guessing it's the motor, the oil was all clean and I have no visable leaks. I did a quick search on "iboats" and they seem to run in the lower $100 range, which is a cheap repair for a boat, but still more than I want to spend on a guess. So, is this a common problem, what else should I be looking for? I did some searching with no real luck.

And, one more question, what is the correct way to drain the fluid? Did I do it right, I think I only got about half of it out, and whats the procedure to re-fill? I don't think I need to drain more, but I do need to re-fill it properly.

Thanks in advance,
Austin

Sounds like a mtr going to heck. It has to be in the full tilt up position to fill it. Then cycle it up and down 5 times and recheck the fluid level.

Mine has been doing the same thing. (1990 Johnson GT200) When I get on plane and start to trim up, I get the high pitched squeal. I didn't drain mine- just made sure it was topped off. I thought it was the hydrofoil I recently installed, but have been told it shouldn't make a difference.

Thanks for the reply's.

I'm going to order a new motor. I did some more reading and it seems like that's the problem. My guess is the bearings are shot.

I didn't take it apart yet, but looking at the parts breakdown I see there is an O-ring under the motor. I'm going to order that as well as new O-rings for the lines and fill plug. Is there anythign else I should get before I place the order.

Thanks again,
Austin
