Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I watched a bunch of Friscoboaters threads on youtube and that was from beginning to end, not that I had alot of time to do it but alot of late nights, and well I learned a bunch from those vids of his and a few others but mostly his seemed to be the most interesting and informative. His step by step, everybody's for that matter showed all aspects of the tear down and rebuild of the boat and many lessons learned but I am still catching myself lookin back to his vids for information and techniques to make my progress better. Give him a shout and ask questions trust me they will help where ever they can do so, including 2 cents worth too. Thanks all and Merry Christmas

Kind of hard to tell from this pic, but I got the balsa core up on the bow section. I even got some of the edges dressed up in the bow where the deck was, getting it ready for grinding and started the mid section before I gave up.

Ho Ho Ho!

Well I got most of the midsection of balsa core removed today.
As you can see in this picture there was a newer fresh part that was mostly intact, though it was moist. Hard to get out too!

This is where the midsection meets the bow section, the bow section has about 1/4" of more fiberglass on it than the middle secdtion had.
Will this need to come up?

Still yet another layer of glass here in the bow, this need to come up?

Tomorrow the plan is to finish the midsection then attack the the rear section. Once I get this I will be ready to get the motor out and start the bilge area and motor mounts and remainder of the stringers.

Making progress!

Where you removed the balsa,I wonder if you could build it up with 1/8 inch plywood veneers and epoxy.I think it would be stiffer and the hull could with stand pounding through waves without twisting and flexing.A stiff hull is more effiecent hull.Just an idear.

I like this...haven't checked pricing of the balsa to compare.

Got most of the balsa up in the mid section, what a chore! not sure what this was laid down with, but there are 2 huge chunks of it on either end of the area. The stuff is very brittle, no glass in it from what I could tell. Dark in color. I have seen it in several locations from the last work that was done on the boat.

Will try to get the aft section up this week. Then long weekend to get the gantry crane and motor cart put together then try and get the motor pulled out, only if the weather holds up. Been very wet this past weekekend, yard is very soft, won't be pulling the motor in this muck.

Wasn't much today, but it is progress.

just glass it......one csm and a full 1708 wrap....then feel the hull.....is is stiff?,.,,,,if you like it ....great....if you dont....then hit it again..
2 layers of 1708 is just about as thick as a hull....

if you re foam the boat with pour in....that will make it plenty stiff with just one layer of csm/1708,

i would leave the bow area.....unless its wet.

I already took the bow core out, it was wet. The rear section may have some dry wood in it. The section I finished up today was dry on one side but wet on the other. I figured if any wet at all I would just take it all out. Guess I could just remove the wet, get to good dry wood then move on. I know my hands would appreciate that. That stuff is hard to let go once it is down.

Hope you all had a nice Christmas. I just posted pictures on my thread of the gantry I built. It is stout, no doubt about it.

Let me know how you do on yours

Hey Trooper,
Just recently got on to your thread. You are a MADMAN. Lots of progress in a small amount of time. Hope the back is holding up. I feel your pain. I've been dealing with it since I broke mine in the '80s. Boy, that was a bad day. Putting a bit more height and slope on your canopy will help the back and the water run-off. As to the balsa wood, it must have been the way to form the hull back in the day. I cut up my old early '70s Crestliner a few years back and found the same. It was balsa between two layers of glass, front to back. Great job on keeping us up to date with posts and photos. It may get you in the hall of fame with Frisco and Oops.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Tonight was an easy night, on the body but not the mind. I have been thinking about materials for the deck. I think it makes sense to get everything ready and pre-fit before starting the grinding. Had the Mrs. come out and sit in the boat with me while I was taking meaurements. Used the grid system. Measured the overall length of the deck, then measured the width every 12" starting at the bow and working my way back. I neglected to consider the bilge area because I already had that information wrote down. Same goes for the gas tank area and locker. Who knows where that is now though! Doh!!! Hence I have not accounted for that information in the drawing below.

Found a neat free program, Google Sketchup. Took about 30 minutes to figure out how to get some 2D drawings made.

Options "C" and "D" are out of the question. "A" and "B" make the most sense. The drawing is pretty close to actual scale as far as the length and width go, but the angle on the front may be off some. "B" has those 2 areas that are 3 3/8" x 9", if this is what it actually turns out to be, then that is too big of an area to fill in. So that Leaves "A" as the logical choice. I will however confirm that "B" will not work before going to "A", because I think this is the better choice by far.

Would love to hear everyone's input.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Two things.
1.) "B" will work if you lay the bow piece side ways like the rest it appears you would have enuf scrap to do the nose piece.

2. You can buy 4 x 8 sheets of Cardboard from U-haul or Moving companies usually for less than 5 bucks a sheet. (They use em for walkways to protect the floors when moving). You can then use a school compass with pencil to scribe the sides of the hull onto the cardboard and get a "Spot On" accurate measurement of the hull for your deck.

That is a good idea Wood on the card board, I'm sure it is cheaper than plywood.

Thanks for the tip on the Google Sketch-up download... just got it and starting to play with it...just what I needed...another distraction...:D

PS- just a thought, you can scab together a short section of the deck to a larger section from underneath before you install it, if you still need to, that is...

Think of it as a tool, not a distraction GT ;)
