I prefer A myself.

I wood(pun) use 4x4 for you up rights and notch them for the feet and top beam.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

We almost have a Gantry Crane!

I changed my design a little. Went with 2x6's paired up for each base, then 4x4's for uprights and cross beam - Lap jointed as suggested by ben2go. The angles for bracing the top and uprights are made from T'd 2x4's. I will only be running 3.= 1/2 inch screws in these - hope they hold. I worked till I could no longer take it. Got everything cut out and put together. Still need to mate the uprights to the bases, saving that for morning when I have some help.

The wheels and the extra wood I went to pickup at closing (pretty close) will be used to make a dolly for the motor. By this time tomorrow the motor should be out and sitting pretty on the dolly, barring any unforseen gotcha's.

The Mrs. Says this is my best side....

Everything I needed except more screws, another 4x4 and a couple 2x6's. Had to make a last minute run back to Lowes.

I'll post more pictures once the sun comes up, was too dark to take any worth looking at.

Sounds like a solid plan.Give it a good coat of urethane if it stays out side and keep the weight close to the ground when rolling it around.A couple locking casters will help.I've seen gantries with an extra set of wheels under or close to the up rights for extra weight support.

Ben, I'll do that with the urathane, doesnt take long for wood to go sour down here. The castors ore not going onthe crane, no room to move it around where I have the boat. Will just lift the motor, pull boat out, then set it down on the dolly. Not sure how confident I am in the 4x4's and the braces keeping the load balanced if trying to move it around. (the crane)

That sounds like an even better plan.

Got up this morning and finished putting the crane together. 10x10 this thing is huge!

I decided to put it together out in the yard where I had room to manuever
DSC00756.jpg

Moved the boat underneath. I tightened up the hoist and.....
DSC00757.jpg

Creeeeaaaaakkkkkk!!!!!!

Will it hold?

Once The initial load was settled in, lifted right up!
DSC00758.jpg

As I approached the height required to clear the transom, the chain was starting to twist real good on the hoist.....to the point where it was kinking up and not laying properly on the lower pulley...
DSC00759.jpg

one time it dropped abit as the kink rolled around on the pully...

This would have to be high enough

The Mrs moved the truck, pulling the boat out from under the motor.

There she sits, safe on the ground
DSC00770.jpg

Sans inboard....Oily mess in here...
DSC00784.jpg

This motor mount pulled out with little effort - Note the dusty wood
DSC00785.jpg

Had to use a wrench o this one, but it was not much better than the other side
DSC00786.jpg

In my rush to get the boat put back in place, I forgot to get a picture of the motor on the dolly. Sits higher than I thought it would. It did work though, and I was able to move it pretty easily.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks Allen. You and your family have a safe Happy New Years as well.

I noticed the deflecton in the pictures too, didn't notice it when I was doing the lift. Only 2 days left for me to work on the boat, then a mandatory 2 week layoff (I have a work trip). I would like to finish getting everything out that needs to come out.

I think you are right there with me as far as progress.

Good morning Trooper
Wow, you are really moving a long.
Excellent pictures of the engine removal.
I should be getting my engine out Monday or Tuesday.

Did you use 2x6's for the top beam? I too noticed the deflection.

Maybe I can catch up in the next 2 weeks. lol

Hey BH,

No I used a 4x4. Wish I would have used the 4x6's.

You are doing very well with your demo, I'm sure you will get lots done in the next 2 weeks :)

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Here's a little tip for NEXT time. I'm sorry I missed your gantry build this time. For your support beam two 2x6 Screwed together with a piece of " metal flashing sandwiched in between will yield a beam that is unbelievably strong and resistant to deflection. Learned this from a framer that did Heavy Load Rafter Framing for Snow Country in Colorado. Putting some Gorilla Glue or PL in there will help too. Even a piece of 1/4" plywood sandwiched will yield a much stronger beam than a solid piece of 4x4 or 4x6 wood.

Wood - you know I was going with 2x6 sandwiched together until I got to the store and started buying the materials. Changed my plans at the last moment. I wish I had stayed with the 2x6. As long as it holds up for the installation all will be good. I doubt I will ever use it again.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Happy New Years everyone.

I hope you are all staying safe...

I managed to get the tarps pulled down and put just the plastic sheeting up. Less weight for the pvc to hold up and allows more light in. My own little green house......several species of fly liked it.

I am almost completed with the demo!!!!!!!!

Only have the transom/bilge area and balsa core in one section under the tank to remove and I am done cutting things out. I should be able to get this completed tomorrow. Then I will be mia for 2 weeks. Hate to say it, but think I could use the break.

Today's progress:

What are these wires for? Does not look like they have been used in some time.
DSC00789.jpg

Very moist wood in the transom.
DSC00791.jpg

One side down, one to go
DSC00792.jpg

Hopefully I get the skin on the transom wood pulled off tomorrow- along with cleaning up the stuff sticking up from hull after todays work. My OT blade was broke in three pieces, still attached to arbor though, just made it tough to get a straight line - also didn't cut too well.
DSC00793.jpg

I was surprised what I found when I took the motor mounts out. I was expecting a 4x6 in here, was actually three 2x6's that had been angled and nailed together. That would be a cheaper alternative for manufacturing cost savings.

Ben, Decker, Bear,

Thanks for the support.

Getting ready to go out and get the transom wood out. Hope it comes out as easy as I anticipate.

Will give an update later.
