Not that big a problem mfasis. Once you get the gear case assembled, make sure the lower unit is in neutral and the shift handle is in neutral (this lines up the shift gear in the upper end)and slide the lower unit up toward the midsection. Make sure the the water tube mates up with the pump housing and the shift shaft is going up straight. You should be able to feel the drive shaft splines meet up with the crankshaft splines. You may need to turn the flywheel a little clockwise for the splines to mate up. Once you have the gear case all the way up, put a bolt in to support the gear case and install the rest of the bolts.

Re: 84 Johnson Sailmaster 8 water pump

Thnak you for your help. Unfortunetly I found out that I have a bigger problem. As I said the motor came with the lower unit removed and the water pump housing was broken and missing pieces. Well now I figured out why. The drive shaft did not come out with the lower unit. It is still attached to the powerhead. The PO obviously was trying to remove the lower end and the drive shaft was stuck and they broke the water pump housing which freed the drive shaft from the lower unit.

So now my question is-- How do I remove the drive shaft from the power head?

Once again, any help is very appreciated.

There's been several post on just that problem mfasis....but with the lower unit still attached. Here's what ya' might try. Turn the engine upside down so you can shoot some penetrating oil or PB Blaster down in where the drive shaft splines and crank splines meet. Let it soak a good long while.

Pin the flywheel so it don't turn so you can work the driveshaft back and forth to try and losen it up. If the impeller key way on the drive shaft is flat, you can grab this with a cresent wrench or put a small pipe wrench on the shaft in a place that won't hurt any surface that a seal won't ride on....usually high up the drive shaft. You may be able losen it up enough to pull it out. But make sure you soak it a good long while before hand.

Let us know how ya' make out.

Boy , perhaps it's just me, but, I've read here on this forum that folks with mid 80's Johnson's 8hp and 6hp have the same problems. I myself had a spun crank on a 84' 6hp Johnson. Perhaps it was an issue with the way the crank was broached, who knows. Another reason to replace the water pump impeller every few years is to grease the drive shaft/crank junction.

Mfasis, if you're lucky and have little or no spline damage, be sure to grease the drive shaft splines upon re-assembly. No grease on the end of the drive shaft, just the splines. The grease helps take the torque and prevents seizing the crank to the shaft.

Follow OBJ's good advice and post back to let us know how things went. Good Luck.
