Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

The stringers are getting better, I'm thinking of coating them again.

Question: I have glassed the transom in with 2 layers of 10 oz. cloth. I have also tabbed them in with 2 layers of 10 oz. cloth. Will this be sufficient or should I prep for more. I have 20 yards of cloth and can add more. I currently do not have any 1708 biax.

Using US composites thin epoxy system with a 3:1 mix.

Thanks

Looks like you are moving along nicely! Sounds like you have the stringers tied in pretty good, but a few more layers never hurts:D. I actually used 2 oz mat, 4 layers, no problems at all. My stringer was originally just tabbed in, but I ran my new glass the full lenght. One note, mat is weighed by the square foot, and cloth is measured by the yard....so the mat is more like 18 oz if you weigh it like cloth. I don't know why they do that, always confuses everyone! Keep up the good work, hope we see you next summer!

tinkeringwackyone,
I think I got carried away when I did mine. I used 1.5 oz CSM and then two layers of 18 oz woven and the another layer of CSM. Of course I did the same on my stringers. Those suckers aren't going anywhere. :D
Like I said, I don't think I needed all that but I know there are good to go.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Bob, sounds like your building it sturdy enough,

I have four layers of 10 oz matt in the center piece which tie to the hull and three layers on the end pieces. I will probably tab in and extra on each sides and to the bottom of the hull on the outside pieces again.

I'm at that point I think I can start thinking about PL'ing the stringers into place. I have had them in the sun for two days now and will leave them out again tomorrow. they are almost tack free now.;)

Home tonight but cut firewood today and just don't feel like working on the boat:eek:

Thank you everyone for your input and interest.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Just came in and thought I'd post a few pics of the progress.

a view of one of the stringers that I have upside down. I use PL to make a fillet so the glass would flow better in the corners.

A view of the rough opening for the gimbal housing. Here I am dry fitting the unit so I can make do any trimming to make it fit better.
If you notice the oversized bolt holes filled with epoaxy worked great. I feel better knowing the bolts are surrounded by epoxy rather than wood. The will also get sealed with 4200. ( I have 5200 but that may be to strong as it is permanent.)

Haven't seen this look for while, to bad it is only temporary.

After everything fit correctly I began to seal it with epoxy. Here is the first coat. BTW I also made sure that the where the exhaust pipe bolts to the gimbal housing had enough clearance so I could get the bolts in.

A view from the outside looking in.

I also used the remaining epoxy for another coat along the bottom of the stringers. I used some older wood that was in good shape for them, which was had external glue, and it seems to be soaking up the epoxy. This made a third coat. They did finally dry for the most part. Where it did drip they were still tacky but this will get knocked off so the glass can wrap around it.

Thats all for now

Good looking ride man and nice work. Just remember in the end it cant be worse than when you ripped into it. From the looks of it must be much better than factory.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Just dropping a note to let you all know that we have a new sailor amongst us. Michelle gave birth to a son last night at 11:05 pm. Kamron Bryan weighed 7 lbs 8 oz. I'll post pics when we get home.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Mr. TWO,

First off, congrats on the new family member! What an exciting time!

I just read this thread as I embark on repairing my 89 160BR that I've had since new. The poor thing hasn't been out of the yard in the last three seasons. My softball player is finished due to arm problems, so lake time is again a possibilty. What one does with a washed-up 14 year old softball player is a completely different subject, but she and her older sister want me to fix the boat.

It needs new interior coverings and I found a squishy spot in the RH aft floor at the stringer. Hopefully, it's not major, but I know the way of rot and have mentally prepared myself.

I am impressed with the work you have done on your boat and trailer. The trailer looks like new. I am encouraged by reading your story and impressed by the depth of knowledge available here. The way you're going on the boat, I'll bet it will look new, too, when you finish. I wish you well as you proceed. By the way, I really envy your shop.

Good looking family. Better start the internet search for a grinding suit for that young man. Might have to have one made. Maybe he can run the 4in with a flap disk while your putting down some glass.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Quick update as I have not posted anything on the boat recently, we had to take Kamron to Kearney this past week as he developed a bacterial infection. We found out finally that is was peptostreptococcus, a bacteria that lives in us but under low immune cases or traumatic experiences, (being born? :) ) can rarely flair up.

We have been in the Kearney NE hospital for a week now and get to go home later this afternoon.

He has done well through this whole ordeal. We caught this early enough that he has made a full recovery. Between God and the doctors, nurses and antibiodics he is doing great.

Soon the new sailor will back home and we will be back on the boat.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Congrats on the FINE son!!!!! You will cherish the time you and he spend together on the water in YOUR boat!!!!!(The Girls TOO!!)
FYI...Most epoxy resins come in two types....Laminating and finishing....
Each are made for a specific purpose as their name implies....Laminating resin remains "tacky" for a period in order to improve the bond with suceeding layers..... The finishing resin(the "waxy one") is intended to set-up "harder" in order to provide easier "finishing" and is normally used for the last coat or two.....Of course, it MUST have the waxy coating on the surface removed before trying to apply another coat/layer....
Not sure about Poly Resin as it is not usually suggested for "laminating"
structures as it is more "brittle" than epoxy, but is cheaper in cost...

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Hey Tink,
Glad to hear all is well with the newbie. They can scare the crap out of you at times, but glad he is doing better.
I have been gone myself for a while.
Take care and we will be looking forward to reading more updates on the family and the boat.
