Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Just gonna post a couple things tonight. worked on getting the deck 'fixed' where I had to install 'relief' cuts so I could pull the cap together. Used a mixture of resin/glass and dust to make a thicker mixture for the joints. cut a piece of wood where i made the oversized relief cut. Also second coated the bilge area so I can install the gimbal housing and the transom plate.

the closer I get to completing this project the more I question by build....did I use enough glass, did I space this right or that correctly, will the boat fly apart when I take it out. these things are really starting to fill my head. Will the engine be aligned. will the seals 'seal' will the bellows leak.

With all of this going on, will I enjoy it or keep thinking about these things when I'm done?

Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed this project and would like to tackle another. Knowing what I know now, I would change things in the next project to better the build.

Thanks for your support.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Last night I second coated the bow pieces with epoxy and dry fitted the gimbal housing/transom plate to the transom. Naturally I forgot some of the hardware at my shop at home, but was too tired to keep working. Good thing I stopped as when I got home I could not see straight from being tired. Late nights starting to catch up with me.

May not get much done the boat tonight as we have our Church's Seder supper and then will be gone out of town to visit my sister who is having her third child this am.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

At this point I'm a little frustrated with the epoxy. I have been trying to seal the bow seat components and the epoxy does not seem to be setting up. It is the laminating epoxy as I have used before. The previous layups would be dry in 24 hours in the heated shop. The last 6 batches (small batches) have not dried very well. still seem to be tacky for quite awhile. In fact when I 'snap' the plastic mixing container, the residue is usually soft and not hard. I have mixed several small batches. In fact this shipment I received just a month and a half ago. the earlier batches out of the same container were fine. The only thing I can think of is that it is warmer outside and the heater doesn't run as much, thus a 'cooler' warm shop.

May have to crank up the heat to get it to cure.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Worked on the deck tonight, was able to get most if it reglassed after I had to cut my relief cuts. Cranked up the shop heater to try and get the uncured epoxy to finish curing. I think its working. I truly believe the temp was to low for a proper mixture, even though I was inside the heated shop.

I also got the gimbal housing and transom plate bolted together to the transom. need to double check the torque tomorrow night. Should be able to get most of the work done needed for heat this week so I can take this thing back to my shop at home. (no heat) and install the engine a get serious about seeing the light at the end of the tunnel

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Took a picture of the 140 horses that I put back in the barn last night. Trying to keep progressing as the boat is now not in the heated shop in town, but back at my shop at home.

Installed the engine and will begin cutting to fit some of the bow pieces so I can seal and install them this weekend.

Picture of the engine sitting back in its rightful place.

Only thing I forgot was to put the bilge pump in before I dropped the engine in.

Nice work Tink. Looks like you will make your target date. The motor looks great! ...and what did you do to get the blue finish looking so nice?

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Thanks SD for the encouragement. As far the the gelcoat, I wet sanded with 2500 grit sandpaper, then used a rubbing compound (turtle wax paste) and then used a polishing compound. It looks pretty good. I wanted to do that area so i didn't have to try and buff around the gimbal housing.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

my transom was also really discolored I sanded lightly with 600 grit that got a lot out and I just bought some 1000 grit to finnish up then go over with some rubbing compound!Did it take a lot of sanding with 2500 grit?

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Hey Tink, the boat's lookin great! I have an '84 Seville and there is rotted wood where I bolt down the front of the motor, making the boat out of commission until it's fixed. What wood did you use and did you just attach it to your stringers or what is actually supporting the front motor mount? I am ripping up all the carpeting, which happens to be indoor carpeting (don't know what this guy was thinking or if he even was) and start on this whole project Thursday. I'm kinda scared to see what the stringers look like. Gotta love it when a previous owner didn't cover the boat...Thanks in advance!

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

crjflyer32....Thanks for the compliments, First of all welcome to Iboats,
sorry to hear about your issues, but it can be fixed. Definitely look a stringers, may have rot as well. The wood I used was exterior grade plywood that I picked up at the local Menards (Home Depot, Lowe's or local lumber yard) I used two two pieces of 3/4" and a piece of 1/2", and PL'd (PL is a waterproof construction adhesive found at the local stores as well, we use the premium.) together to make a layered sandwich if you will. If I were to do it again I would use resin for the adhesive as it is stronger. I attached it to my stringers using the peanut butter mix for a fillet and layered fiberglass to the stringers. I may run some S.S. lag bolts in from the front as the front motor mount butts up to the first bulkhead, but haven't decided yet as it's pretty strong as is.

I used epoxy resin,(epoxy is expensive) but most guys use polyestor resin (which is good as well). Depending on the extent of fiberglass you need you could buy it locally, or if you need a lot, www.uscomposites.com is a wonderful place to buy glass. A top contender for glass is 1708 biax glass, which has both CSM (chopped stranded matt, and woven rug sewn together.) That would be my preference on my next project.

Good Luck and keep us informerd.

Make sure your stringers are good, test them by drilling small holes in them and look for dry wood shavings. If wet or discolored you have rot going on.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

nemo2011... As far as the 2500 grit, it took some time, I didn't want a whole lot of deep scratches so I went with higher grit. I could probably for with a coarser grit but haven't done a lot of the detailing yet to decide. But it did turn out nice.

Josh P....isn't it a great feeling to be installing rather than tearing apart?.....but sometimes rippin and tearin is great therapy...we should see more projects like these outside psychiatrists office..oh wait ...that may put them out of a job.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Oh wow, what a mess! Got the carpet up and found some bad wood on edges around gas tank panel and center storage. This made me curious, so I cut out a 12x18 and the wood was soaked. So I left the hole open to dry a little. Then I cut a piece out between the forward bench seats. Again, I found some more wet wood. I left this hole open as well to dry. We have a family friend who has been building boats for a living for over 30 yrs who said he will take a look and replace the area around the motor mount since it is easier to remove the engine than try to replace around it still in the boat. Gonna be a fun couple of months.

crjflyer32,

sorry about the mess, but you can fix it. More than likely it will be a full rebuild if is that wet. I would definitely look at it that way, new transom, stringers, deck. Time will give you all the experience you need.

Mine is nearing 2 years due to life and some expense. you'll get there. keep us posted.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Finally getting some work done. The engine is installed along with the new gimbal bearing. Aligned it with the alignment tool that my local welding shop made for me. Rub rail is nearly done. Wiring harness is installed and almost all of the wires have homes. Need to finish glassing in the drivers/passenger seats, seal the bow seats, glass in the rear seats.

hopefully can get it in the water, but not done, for the fourth of July. We'll see.
