As stated, You can special order 5x10 sheets of plywood but...I don't want to Pay for it ($300 for 4'x8' 3/4" Marine Grade + $75 shipping)!!!!

Yeah, I meant OEM typically. $375/sheet of ply definitely prices it out of my budget.

Am I missing something about the width? You stated you are about 5" short side to side? So your measurement from port to starboard width is approximately 4'-10". Are you laying the 4'x8" plywood length wise? If you are, then just cut the lenth down from 8' to 4'-10" and purchase an additonal sheet of plywood. An extra sheet would be a heck of a lot cheaper than purchasing a special ordered size. I hope I didn't mis-read anything earlier in the thread. Hate seeming like a fool....

Daniel1947, you are not a fool!. I just need to buy another piece of 4x8 ply and make a seam. No biggie. I just didnt expect that. I wont be spending the extra bucks on a special order piece, doesnt make sense. Thanks for responding thou, appreciated.

Big D, Last year this time up here it was warm already. It should start to warm up in the next couple weeks hopefully, at least we are getting some more light now!!
Im working outside for the most part under tarps just like you using what ever heat lamps i can find LOL. Doing all the measuring outside and then cutting my wood in the basement. Glassing small pieces in my fathers heated shop. (his shop is too small to put boat in unfortunately). Also being doing the upholstery work at my father in laws shop, actually he is doing the upholstery for me. So hopefully when it warms up i can just bed and glass the rest in.

 ya, its like an acrobatic act combined with an Olympic event when I do get to work in mine... climbing in and out with tools/materials, trying not to trip on the snowblower behind the boat, or the tire frozen to the driveway just behind the swim platform, get out of the door with out catching on it and going on my face, then getting back in the shop before all my extremity's fall off...

LOL....... thats funny man...... yesterday i was outside for so long that my feet started to hurt so bad I couldnt walk on them I had to go inside to defrost them. I just do little bits at a time here and there and its slowly coming together. Im determined to splash this baby in the spring. It doesnt have a name yet so Im naming it the "Water Lily" sounds corny but my Daughters name is Lily and she is so excited to have her name on it.

Looking at my options for painting my bilge, ski locker and the glassed wood that surrounds the engine. Any thoughts? Is bilgekote my best option. I want to paint it white.

Thanks gents!

I find that BilgeKote yellows pretty quickly. I have used "Floor and Porch polyurethane", which is pretty close to BilgeKote with better results and a lower cost.

Another option would be gelcoat, which can be brush or small roller applied in a bilge application, since it does not have to be too pretty.

Here is my handy work using Ace Floor & Porch Polyurethane.

Thanks - I will see if I can find that brand up here in Canada. What store do you get that in the US?

I got the paint at an ACE Hardware. They have their own house brand of polyurethane paints. I checked the MSDS spec's versus the Bilgekoat and they were nearly identical.

You can get gel coat from Composites Canada out of Mississauga I believe. They may also have some polyurethane products as well.

Thanks for the tip. I still may just buy the bilgkote. I don't want to end up buying the wrong stuff and mess things up.

I painted my bilge ski locker with white gelcoat. Rolled it on. It took 2-3 coats. Looks pretty good and since it's in the bilge and ski locker, I didn't worry about getting it real smooth. So far, it seems quite durable.

ok thats sounds interesting. Does gel coat cost more than say traditional bilgekote?

Not much when you are buying poly resin & etc from a supplier already. Any work or repairs to the exterior of the hull, transom or cap?

You could use gelcoat on the deck & interior surfaces too.

Re: 89 Bayliner capr Stringer/transom replacei-Question about winter fiberglass repai

It's been more than a year since I compared prices, but I think they were pretty much the same, especially if you don't have to pay shipping just for the gelcoat. There are no places near me that sell gelcoat or bilgekote, so any shipping costs were basically a wash in my case.

As with all applications of polyester resins (or any coating, really), surface prep is important. Otherwise, the stuff is easy to use. It has a shorter pot life than most paints, of course, because it's catalyzed, but that also means you can recoat sooner....
