It was so cold that my lower unit cracked even in my garage. Now I have a 125hp 1989, which lower units are interchangeable with mine. I see a coupld 1994 150 hp on e-bay, will they work? Will the 120hp work?

I don't have the answer for you, but the people that do, are probably going to need to know what lower unit you have now, thru hub exhaust? or not?

Model number of motor?

You might check ebay and do a search for lower unit force. There are a couple there right now. If it makes you feel better the unit probably would have failed on you anyway. The only way it would have cracked is if water was in it and if It had enough water to make it crack it was probably already rusting. Better to have it fail in your garage then on the lake.

Hi Chris
The Question is, where is your L/U cracked? It may not be as bad as you might think. Then again, it may be worse. Quite often these type things can be welded up. Does this crack actualy invade the gear case proper ( to where gear oil is leaking)? Or does it just effect the exhaust side? Can you post a picture of the damage?

The 1989 model 125HP Force motors have a non-through-hub exhaust, single piece driveshaft type A lower unit on them from the factory. They can be converted to run the newer two-piece lower units, but you have to be modification-savvy sometimes, depending on your midsection waterpump recess. Besides, those old lower units were as solid as they come.
Your options are all going to depend on your budget to get it fixed. If your budget is a couple hundred bucks, then E-Bay is the way to go. Just remember, a lot of these guys dump the milky junk, fill them with clean oil, and sell them with no warranty. You take it out and think everything is great with the world again until you find out your seals are blown and your going to have to dump more money into it. Then the mechanic calls you back and says there is rust in it and.....get the picture?
Don't spend $1500 on a lower unit for a 15 year old motor, but there is still quite a few of us out there that are rationally priced on rebuilt lowers.

I heard it was related to the Merc family that year and was actually fairly reliable.

I found a 1990 120 hp Force. Would be compatible with my 1989 125hp Force?
