Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

See, now that is cool. The boat can wait.
Thanks for the comment Jay. Sorry it took so long to reply back. She put 830 rounds through that gun in one month. We put the calculator to it, and it cost me about $o.31 every time she pulls the trigger. That is just the cost of the ammo and clays. It does not include all the guns, gas, and entry fees. At least she is having fun. Thanks, Steven

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

Well, since we were given a few days of cool weather, I figured this is my last opportunity to get some of the grinding done. Yesterday, I broke out the Tyvek coveralls and my full face respirator and got after it. I was able to get the transom done and about 2' of one of the stringers. After catching my fingers twice with the sanding disk, I figured I better stop while they were all still attatched and get some better (tougher) gloves. Can someone remind me again why there is this gaurd looking thing on the grinder that is easliy removed. I seem to have forgotten. If all goes well, I am going to try and do some more in the morning. It is amazing how much dust it makes but it was funny watching the cars pull over on the shoulder of the road when I hooked onto it so I could blow it out. It looked like it was on fire and a car actually pulled over on the shoulder of the road pointing at my boat. I just waved and kept on driving. Thanks, Steven

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

Well, I finally made a little headway on the Sea Ray this week. I was able to get the transom and one stringer sanded down. Yesterday, I decided to put the gaurd back on my grinder and bought a good pair of leather gloves. It's amazing how well all the safety stuff protects you. I was hoping to get both stringers done but my wife called me and needed some help at my sons school (teacher appreciation week). Needless to say, I did not get the other side finished. Hopefully, now that I have kinda got back in the mood, I will stay with it. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Myself, I started back on nights tonight so I will be working. Thanks, Steven

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

Ok, I have finally come to the conclusion that my boat is not going to fix itself so I have actually made a little headway last week. I was able to get the port stringers sanded down last week. This morning, instead of going to bed when I got home from work (shift worker) I decided to stay up and work on the Sea Ray while the shade was still on the west side of my house. It took about 45 minutes, but I was able to get the whole starboard stringer sanded down in one setting. By the time I was finished, my full face respirator was just about plugged. I was really having to work hard just to breathe. It is unbelievable how much dust this makes. You should see the cloud when I hook on to it and drag it down the road to blow it out. A five mile round trip and the dust is gone. I'll post some more pics after it is washed out later. Thanks, Steven

All of this dust is from grinding the starboard stringer only:

That is a great idea on how to get rid of dust. Just hook it up to your truck and dragged down the road. AWESOME! It looks like you're moving right along though. I remember when my hull looked like that

Jay,

It is probably a little late on your boat, but pulling it down the road works great on removing the dust. I just eez out of the neighborhood real slow until I get to the main road. I'll have to get the kids to video it one day. After about 5 miles, all is gone. Come home and wash the rest out with the water hose. It's also a little funny watching people point at your boat letting you know its on fire (lol). Thanks, Steven

Steven,

Looks like you're making great headway doing my personal favorite - grinding!! I really like your cleanout method. I'm still sewing, stuffing, and stapling. I was in LJ this weekend hanging with my mom and getting some chores done. I'll be back that way in a month or so and will try to give you a holler.

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

I have a quick question. The pictures below are of what will be the bottom of the port side bow seat box. Today, I sanded off all of the old floor that went along this box and removed the two tubes of PL and a litle wood that was left. My question is, since this area will be the bottom of the box, do I need to continue grinding the fiberglass and PL that is left under the front edge? I know that I still need to sand away the gray painted surface so I will have something for the new fiberglass to adhere to. Also, the bottom is is probably 1/2" thick. Sea Ray may have went cheap in the areas that could use the extra glass / PL, but they did not go cheap here. Thanks, Steven

Steven,

My opinion is that if you are down to a clean surface that will allow good adhesion, and can match the profile with the new wood, it will be plenty good.

Thanks for info Mike. I was kinda thinking the same thing. Let me know when you are coming down next. I'll be sure and have plenty off sanding pads ready to go (lol). I probably have a good 6 hours of grinding left to do but I can only stand about 45 minutes to an hour at a time before I start getting hot. I am off Monday and start nights on Tuesday so I am hoping this cool weather will hang around just a few more days so I can get it wrapped up. I checked out Us Composites today for supplies and those prices are going to slow the project way down. Thanks, Steven

Steven,
The Boats lookin good. Your de-dusting the boat was clever I should of done that. Looks like you are almost ready to cut and glass some wood so good luck and have some fun. I know at some point this Texas weather is just gonna kill us but right now it fairly good. So latter

I removed all the grey stuff. I noticed that is some areas there was alot more glass than just the hull. Like where the mounts were and the engine box. I just feathered that stuff into the hull glass. But for sure get rid of the grey.

That is my plan Jay. Sea Ray may have cut corners everywhere else, but they made up for it in the engine and bilge area. I bet the glass is pushing 1/2" thick in there. I will taper the transition from the grey area down to the hull. When I get to the fiberglass stage, I will probably take it over to my parents house and put it in my dads shop. This way, I will not have to worry about it getting wet before getting everything sealed. I'll have to clean me out a hole first. It is 30' x 60' but it is full of tractors. My dad collects and shows tractors. The weather is cool so I will start grinding in the morning. Thanks, Steven

I did some more sanding this morning while it was cool. I'll try and get a video of the method I use to get all of the dust out of the boat this evening. Thanks, Steven

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

I wrapped up most of the big grinding jobs this morning. I still have some small stuff to do like grinding off the paint on the floor and removing the carpet glue. I also need to remove the side panels and grind away anything that may be there as well. I am getting close to being finished with the destruction phase and headed into the replacement phase. Here is a short video of how I remove the grinding dust from my boat when I finish grinding. It works pretty good. Thanks, Steven

That's classic! Just make sure you don't have a firetruck roll up on you and dump a bunch on water to "put out the fire"...lol

Well, since I am in the fire department here, I guess I would be the first on scene. You couldn't see it, but the Fed Ex truck had the right pass side tires in the grass (lol). You also want to make sure there are no vehicles in the vacinity when you first take off. Thanks, Steven

Work on the Sea Ray has been going a little slow lately but I did manage to do a little bit after work today. I have a quick question. How do I go about removing the throttle/shifter from the side panel? I know on my Evinrude, there is a allen screw on the back side that you remove so you can get the handle off. I do not see that here. Thanks, Steven
