97 Merc Horn problem.

The horn in my 97 Merc 60 hp tiller started going off intermittently last year. It usually started after I was going for 15 minutes or more. I replaced the Impeller and hose but it kept coming on earlier and now pretty much stays on continously from a cold start. I don't think it's an overheat problem since I changed the impeller and you can hold your hand in the tell tale water spout and it's just warm. I think the only other thing connected to it is the oil warning module. It definitely uses oil. Do you know of a way to test if it's the horn, temp sender, or oil sender?
It would normally beep only when starting or if it was low on oil.
How can I isolate this?

Thanks Pier.

A constant beeeeep means overheat. Beep beep beep means oil. A rapid beep beep beep means the warning module is bad. The horn itself can also go bad, you usually hear ghostly beeps coming from the horn, or it just sounds a steady beeeeeeep. Wutcha got?

Re: 97 Merc Horn problem.

Thanks Willy for the reply! It did start out intermittent just coming and going quietly. That's when I changed the impeller and hose. I just don't think it's overheating since it comes on full loundess from a cold start up now and the water coming out isn't hot. I am banking on the horn being bad or warning module, I think the model # is 60ELPTO.

Thanks Pier.

Does it have the integrated oil tank on the motor?

May not apply to you, but the integrated oil tank has a magnetic float that comes loose sometimes and causes alarm.

Basically check for continuity across the oil level sensor with oil in the tank and disconnected from the system. If you get continuity it is bad. If not reconnect then disconnect temp sensor and energize alarm circuit. If alarm goes away it is the temp sensor. If all else fails it is the alarm module. I had this happen to me with similar indications. The alarm module is around 100 USD. Replaced module and and back to normal.

Rockonafly
