the cable should have some travel. after all of the problems you have had with tilt tube it is not surprising that the cable would rather extend than pull the tie-rod fitting through tube. if it's pulling out easily, then your steering may have been seized for some reason other than cable. If everything is back to "proper fit" then you should be able to easily push cable end through tube from right to left with a screwdriver.

looking at picture. with nut off you should be able to push end of cable with a screwdriver and shove it right out of tube. you may have to back the jacket off as you go, but it should just push right through. if it binds then something is wrong.

I just replaced the cable on my Capri with 85 hp force. I had to pick up on motor to clear everything so the cable and rod would come out but it was easy once things lined up. Same as going back in, it just slid right back in. I am glad I did it myself instead of paying someone to do it. The trick is lifting up on motor to get it all lined up with no binding.

I just finished mine friday, had to get a hoist to do it easier with my 120 hp. The steering tube was easier than getting the motor bolts out to lift the engine.

Good luck

Thanks for the help, the end of my steering rod was mushroomed from being beat on. If mushroomed the shaft cannot be driven thru the tube. It will tap out the other side very easily as it did for me.
