A boating magazine for "us"?

When I bought my boat the other month my wife ordered me up a subscription to "Boating" magazine, and while it is a interesting 5 minutes of my time, I'm not looking for a new $300K mega-cruiser or go-fast.. or anything new for that matter. I've always enjoyed, no relished, fixing up an old clunker many others had written off. Nothing makes me feel better than seeing a final product or hearing the purr of an engine previously written for scrap.

Is there a magazine for us? Something which does not have a celebrity section and revolves around the latest in trendy doodads? More along the lines of "What to do when you run out of glue?" headlines or "77 uses for zip strips". Heck, I might even skim an article on "Duct tape and the women who love the men who use it".

Honestly, if there isn't such a magazine.. well, we need one!

Sort of like "The all purpose boat and motor" revival mag?

One that covers replacing bronze screws with more economical things like bodyfiller for its gluing effect?
Or "how to manufacture your own" watercooled exchaust manifold from ABS hardware store items?

Or "how to" silence your loud thru-hull exchaust for once and for all with less money than you spend at Mc Dognuts?

And has "do it yourself" boat plans, like in popular maniacs?

Always thought a magazine featuring boats 20' or under used by the average guy on inland lakes and rivers would be sucessful. I'm thinking numerically that represents the greatest number of boaters. Maybe those of us in that group don't spend enough loot to attract advertisers

"trailer boats" is a magazine like that, still caters to the top end of trailerable boats.

I'll back that statement 100%,

This site IS about the only "all in one" place there is, and the only GOOD one at that!
When it comes to any, and I mean "any" subject on boats (but most other things too) this is the electronic magazine to be in.

It also services your Philosophical, Emotional and Psychological needs and has many other good attributes!

Plus.....BIG plus!...There are NO racial, geographical or ethnical issues here.

In short, the perfect site if your mind is afloat in a boat!

Subsciption is free, and no salesman will come to your door....PERFECT!

Gotta warn you though,.... if you visit here boatless, you may be buying one or parts thereof soon after!

I have subscribed to Wooden Boat in the past.
It's a good periodical for the restorer.

"Us" is rather a general term.And it has its problems.
The main one being that it is very hard to make money of "us".
The average shade tree fixer upper hobby enthusiast has always been and will always be the perfect scrounger of old parts and previously enjoyed articles.
There probably is not enough money to be made on "us" to justify a magazine.
Iboats is the middle of the road where, in the forum section, the do it yourself boater can find the information he needs ,while at the same time the forums provide the exposure that the marine store needs in order to be as successful as it is today.

rolmops, you are 100% correct, it is called give and take. the store provides this great source, in hopes that the members, support the store. besides the store prices are competitive, and often lower when you consider shipping cost, and speed of shipping, called customer service. no other site has this quality.

I agree. I just priced a Stator for My "great Deal" of a motor. 1973 evinrude 50hp.....it was 60 dollars less than most of the comp. and shipping was alot cheaper.

I voted Yes.

And I think the magazine name should be something like "Project Boater" or "Boat Projects & Improvements" or some such.

Advertisers would be parts supply houses and service companies. A special section for low cost suppliers of used parts would be handy. There are plenty of those. Of course, tackle manufacturers and tow vehicle companies would probably want to participate as well. You get the idea.

By having the "improvements" section, there would be an area that could never be sucked dry and could even create additional, ongoing interest. Planning on installing a stereo? How about adding GPS or RADAR? Updating your SONAR? Need to rewire? Add a detailed electronics repair/upgrade/service section.

Maybe add a "how-to" section to build a new baitwell or ice box. Got a bigger boat? A project to install a small head or cooktop, etc. Never run out of ideas there.

Gotta have the major repairs section too. Fixing stringers, rebuilding transoms, working with fiberglass, polyester and epoxy resins. Making molds.

Oh yeah, can't forget the trailer section. Or maybe have a davit/lift section as well.

Naturally, there would NEED to be a restoration section. Perhaps featuring an ongoing project until completion, then printing up a separate "special edition" featuring only that project, from beginning to end. One project follows another forever...

There ARE places in this world where lugging around a computer isn't appropriate. Not to mention how pleasant it is to flip pages in a magazine while watching a favorite boating or fishing show. Nothing like having a hardcopy in hand.

I think it'd be a big hit!
