Hi,
I've been trying to locate the reason for a very harsh vibration/grinding noise in my old 69 Glastron with a straight 6 160 Mercruiser in it. It only does this when its in nuetral at a fast idle. It was recomended that I remove the drive and look at the Ujoints.. but the Ujoints look and feel great with zero play.. Also the gimbal bearing turns free, and feels very tight with no play that I can feel either.. The gimbal bearing when turned does have some very slight roughness when turned in one spot.. Also were the drive shaft goes into the top of the drive the bearing is very tight there with no slop.. The only slop or play that I can find is that when I turn the drive shaft there is about 3/4 inch play before the prop turns.. Its almost a inch of play.. Now for a couple questions..
How do you grease the gimbal bearing? I can't find any kind of zerk for that.
How smooth should the gimbal bearing be? Is any at all ruffness ok?
How much play is ok to have in the gears of the drive?
Also is it possible that this noise/vibration that I'm looking for could be of the shifting mechanism being wore out so maybe the gears are rubbing in the lower end? When shifting in the lake its got a very spongey feel on the shifter.. And then it just pops out or in when trying to shift.. Sometimes when trying to get it out of reverse it will pop straight into forward gear or vise versa.. It feels like theres alot of slop in it..
Many thanks to anybody that can help me shed some light here.. I'd sure like to figure out whats makin this wraket..
Chris
