You'll have to tell us what boat,trailer and engine you have and whether it's pull start or electric/key start first. If you post a photo of it showing the boat, trailer and engine clearly then we should be able to help :)

Err, you just did create a new "post". Did you mean "thread" or topic? Near the top of the Boat Topics and Questions (not engine topics) page (which shows all the thread titles) is a nice big button that says New Thread.

all this info is great ............ But is there a book I can buy that has all the above and more..........?
a must read for rookies? ........... what are these Rules you folks talk about. as in one post that referred to (see rule 30e) where do these rules come from............... ??

I'm suprised that nobody here mentioned that if you forget the drain plug and the boat is partially swamped before it gets noticed, that all you need to do is start the motor and gun it to start the boat moving. This will help slow the water infiltration if not reverse it.

I too forgot the plug once. Remembering what an old man told me when I was thirteen, I quickly started up the Evinrude and put the pedal to the metal. The boat was a real slug to get moving from all the water weight, but within about 5-7 minutes of panicing, the boat was empty. I continued to journey to shore and corrected the problem.

If you have an I/O, this may or may not apply depending on the amount of water in the bilge.

You do not need a license for your VHF, but I would recommend obtaining a MMSI registration.

All modern VHF radios are equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). All DSC equipment is programmed with a unique nine-digit identification number, known as a Maritime Mobile Service Identity or MMSI.

This identity is the DSC contact number for a vessel. The MMSI is sent automatically with each and every DSC transmission made.

In the case of a Distress DSC call, all DSC equipped radios within range (including Coast Guard) will receive your vessels information and location (assuming integrated with GPS).

I hear that if you forget to put the plug in and only notice it once you are someways offshore that you can go WOT until all the water drains and then quickly take a dip with plug in hand and remedy situation - is this true and how effective?

Well... you can but it takes longer to drain out than it did to get in. I wouldn't recommend taking a dip offshore either-been there done that and it can be a lot harder to get back onboard than you expect..! I'd go back to the shore and put it in.

I have my first boat and have been working on restoring my 23ft glasply for 6 months now off and on. I have read alot and but did enjoy your post. I have done so much work and spent 8,000.00 in repairs and upgrades. I am almost at the point of hooking up power to the starter and can't start it is too cold out. It's just not fair. still little projects to rap up, but am glad they are little one. I have read alot and will continue to do so until the day I put her in the water. Thank you for you post. I look forward to meeting other glasply owners this spring, my boat is pritty simple inside but it is mine and most items are new repaired. I have all required cost guard required items and then some. I realy like my lowrance system I got.
