Alright so I need to vent. I am a younger boat owner and I have always taken the advice of (not older ;))more experieced people in life. I just recently bought my first boat after spending a lot of time on the river with water rescue. You wouldn't beleive how much SH** I got for it! If I hear one more person say "Awe thats just a hole in the water to throw money into" or "Go broke, buy a boat" or "The best two days in a boat owners life is the day they buy it and the day they sell it" AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! The truth is what hobby now adays is cheap!? what hobby do you ever actually get back the money you put into it?!? When someone pays $1200 for a set of golf clubs are they really that much better than a $700 set of clubs? could you turn around and sell them for $1500?? NO! HOBBIES ARE EXPENSIVE!! and to be completely honest no hobby is a good economic descision. Thats not part of it. You spend money on the things you love because TO YOU its worth the money, not because you think you're going to be able to one day make money off of it!

When you spend money on restoring classic cars, or fishing equiptment, or golfing, or boating you can't think about it in terms of money. You think about it in terms of will I enjoy this enough to make it worth it. The only reason I work is to make money, the only reason I make money is to ENJOY IT!!! yes we need to save money to have a nest egg but whats the point of working everyday and not enjoying the fruits of your labor?!? Ok I think I'm better now.

On a side note it is funny that those same people that are giving me crap for buying a boat are the same people that say "so when are you taking me out?" Hmmmm

Some of us boat pretty cheap

Hobbies don't have to be expensive, they can be kept reasonable. Additionally, the main question is "can you afford it?" If the answer is "yes," then it doesn't particularly matter how expensive it is. If the answer is "no," then you're a dufus no matter how cheap it is.

Let the other heads talk. Enjoy your boat.

The only trouble is that everything they are telling you is TRUE! And they forgot B.O.A.T.---Bust Out Another Thousand LOL . But on the other hand, it is cheaper than drinking or women, and maybe even smoking. And certainly less aggravation than a woman--As any man with a significant other will tell you.

Yet, I wouldn't give up my six (or is it seven?) boats and one woman. See: That's where boats are better than women--It is WAY easier to keep six of them. Take my word on that!

HAHA so true bud!!!! I get the "what does BOAT stand for?" Bust out another thousand.....People don't realize some people grew up with boats. I would much rather put money in a boat than fancy golf clubs and a club membership to yuppieville.

Boats are holes in the water to throw money into... And I enjoy every minute of it.

I fall asleep most nights to thoughts of summer, floating on the St. Lawrence. :)

Re: A little Venting anyone?????!!?!?

someone described blue water sailing "as much fun as standing in a cold shower tearing up $100 bills."

With an exception, most of the people who say the negative stuff are jealous that you have a boat b/c they don't, or it's a way to welcome you to the club of boat owners, who spend half their time griping to each other about stuff going wrong--because it makes it easier to take (misery loves company) and it's just what you do.

This forum is a great place for boaters to "stand around at the dock-house bitching about their boats" except we can't grab a beer from someone else's cooler (also part of the boat code).

The exception is when a new boater thinks he can make money on a boat he has fixed up, or that he has improved its sale value by fixing it up. As the OP says, it's a hobby and a hobby is an expense. True, there are professional flippers, and classic boat restoration is a different league, but there's no financial up-side for the recreational boater.

Re: A little Venting anyone?????!!?!?

Have heard it all before and could really care less what people say.

No amount of money could replace the good times we as a family and our friends have had on our boats. We have two kids graduating this month, one H.S. and one college so we put together a graduation video of them both from babies to now. Over half of the photos of them are from out on the water with us and thier friends, almost brings a tear to my eye watching it.

The fun times that I have with my family and friends are worth far more than any money my boat costs me. My only complaint is that I wish I had bought it earlier.

Totally agree.

Re: A little Venting anyone?????!!?!?

After the weekend, my old boss in the office next to me told me about his weekend. He spent money on carp for the house to impress people that might come over some day, stupid mall trips and dinners, all stuffed inside out of the beautiful 76 degree weather we had.

I would need to use profanity to express what I think of that.

I spent money, outside with my family, on the water, in the sun and breezes and ate at a dive on the water and had incredible fish tacos and heard bad music. :D

Boating for the win. Bad music on the water with fish tacos? Or curtains the wife wants hung? BWAHAHAHA!

Agreed Bubba. And when I keep getting ribbed, I show them the pictures of the girls that have hung out on the boat with me.

Did I mention there are no nudity laws in Vermont?

Agreed to the photo Evidence! the only clothing we're allowed to take off in public in KY is shoes....and well.... do teeth count????
The funny part is I do have a "significant other" and I think she enjoys it more than I do! When i talked to her about buying a boat he exact words were "well if it will make you stop talikng about it so much then please do it!!" She was kidding of course. I think i'll hang on to her! :)

I was going to ask if it even mattered if Vermont had no nudity laws. Does anyone in Vermont ever get naked, and are they worth seeing naked?

But barefoot in Kentucky, nekked in Vahmont or cheesing it up in Wisconsin, and all points in between: Boating is a way of life I don't care to explain to people who don't get it. :)
