I don't recall exactly where #1 is located on the distributor cap. Those bakelite screw in terminals of the distributor cap are marked on the top portion of them.

I tried to find a marking on the cap and found none! Looked for a good while and still found nothing. I checked timing again tonight after making sure the points were set right. I set the motor to 18deg full advance and did not run out of thread but I am still far enough out of whack to prevent completing the sync with the carbs. I'm getting frustrated how something described in my manuals as being really simple is taking me weeks to do!

The cylinder markings on the distributor cap would be directly on top of the bakelite terminals, right where the spark plug wire screws into. I have never seen one of those caps that weren't marked.

Did you remove the stator to look at that cap?

I can have a look tonight when I get home but I am sure I didn't see any the last time I looked. I hope that the problem is caused by wrong firing order at least then I can fix it! Some light at the end of the tunnel maybe.
Thanks,
Ray.

Hi Joe,
Striped down the distributor and checked everything again. Found the markings on cap and Plug Wires are right. Am I reading the sync instructions correctly? Could you reword them to make sure I am reading them correctly.
Thanks,
Ray. :)

SYNCHRONIZING THE CARBURETOR AND DISTRIBUTION LINKAGE
a. Mark on throttle cam must align with center of cam follower roller just as it makes contact with cam. See figure 4-24 insert. (I have Done This Part Correct)
b. With distributor base (To Full advance?) and throttle lever (Is this the Throttle Lever on Remote?) at full throttle position against their stops the carburetor throttle shaft (Is this the Linkage connected to the cam roller?) must also be against its full throttle stop. Adjust if required by turning throttle cam yoke on throttle control rod.

Ray,

Took some photos of my engine linkage sent then to you in the e-mail. hope this helps.

Also you may try a different timing light. not likely but it is possible that the timing light may be faulty. I have the type of timing light that I can advance by a potentiometer and I have to make sure it is set to zero scale to get correct timing, the light you are using may have got a little out of calibration if it is not the adjustable type, you can also try checking the timing on your automobile to see if the light is indeed working correctly. Just a thought. Good luck.

Thanks for the pictures just printing them off now. I have the adjustable type timing light I borrowed from a friend who has and Auto Repair Shop. I make sure it's set to zero when I do the timing check. But I may see if I can get my hands on another one to check just in case this one is off.

Re: Advance timing stop screw ran out of thread!

Well I'm sorry for wasting everyones time with this thread as I found out the solution to this issue last night. The key seems to be using the 'A' mark on the flywheel that is meant for the 3 cyl and not the 1969 V4 engines. Oops!
I should be able to get the timming set now if it would only stop raining.
Thanks guys!
