For what its worth on M/C or Cobras, I use a input shaft with the yoke machined off and the shaft undercut where the 2 o rings would go 1/8 th inch undersize. This helps you to see the actual direction on how the motor has to be moved and how far to obtain alignment. using a drill bit or welding rod seems easier than using and reading the grease marks with the actual alignment tool.Once you have the clearance ,then do the grease test with the tool or use an actual shaft.

Re: Alignment tool

Getting the proper 'Feel' of having the alignment bar move easily in and out is a LOT closer than eyeballing a gap.
I can adjust an engine within 1/4 turn of the fine threads on the motor mounts to get them just right. Something you can't even see with that method.
If you want to see, put grease on the alignment bar and see how equal the contact on both sides.

I agree with the "feel" Don for the final test. This is just a rough setting to get started. You mention the final 1/4 turn, most cant believe its that critical to coupler life.
