Re: alpha one no or very very little water exiting through prop or exhaust relief po

called dealer today and was going to order my manifold kit, dealer said that i cannot use center rise manifolds on my boat with out spending 1000.00 due to it being set up for the rear mount log style manifolds. something to do with the y pipe will not mate to the center rise exhaust exit. is this true? i was under the assumption that people sold a conversion kit....... also, on a side note,
can i reinstall everything and start the engine with the out drive in a large bucket of water, but instead of using my merc hoses, can i use some clear hose on all of the cooling system temporarily, just so that i can visually see the water flow...?
thanks for the helo guys.

dont know about a conversion kit, merc dosent do much of those - they like to sell new stuff, its their business

as far as aftermarket who knows what is out there

you may be able to cobble some sort of exhaust together but it will probably be more trouble than its worth

using clear hose is a good idea, merc actually recommends using it in troubleshooting certain overheat conditions between the transom and t-stat housing

i would like to put clear hose goin to the thermostat housing as well as the manifolds and the risers. basically everything but clear hose, so i can see everything working. or not working.
will that work?

I fished over-stretched springs into mine, so's they don't collapse in the bends...

I love that setup Bondo. Not to nitpick, but I am curious about turbulence from the springs. I am thinking if there is no air that it doesn't matter, but another side of me says there must be some pressure rise vs. smooth sides. Probably insignificant, but the curiosity that kills this cat has me wondering . . .

Ayuh,.... None observed QC,...

The springs were Big, like 1, 1/2" diameter big, 'n with over-strechin' 'em down to the 1" id, they're pretty snug inside the hoses...
They were hyd. line cover/ protection springs,..

What's amazed me, is there's less water flowin' through 'em than I was expectin'...
They don't "Fill" with water, expect at Wot...

Well with limited flow like that I guess it wouldn't matter much (springs). This is Alpha drive pump, right? When you look at how the water dribbles out of the drive, your flow comments seem about right. I would've assumed that the hoses were "full" though...

Ayuh,.... Early/ mid-80s Alpha 1...

It originally, when refitted was an Alpha 1, Gen.II motor, 'n the t-stat housin' didn't have the check-balls...

It had an over-heat, only at idle issue...
Changin' the t-stat housin' to match the drive, fixed it...

are you saying its normal for the water to dribble out the drive/relief ports??? i have the alpha drive with the small compressor wheel in the lower end to pull water in.... i believe it is high pressure/low volume, as apposed to the newer low pressure/high volume....
