Alternator issue

I have a 1986 Penn Yan with the 305 ci with mercruiser outdrive and the batteries were not charging so I purchased the best OEM alternator to charge my dual batteries.... Well I pulled the old alternator and the wiring was different from the new alternator....Well I used some common sense and wired it in and mounted it on the engine and she charges like a dream....But of course that was the silverlining on this cloud because I cannot shut the boat off now with the ignition switch.... The old Alternator had two threaded studs on the back side were the new one had one threaded stud and a two pin connection...I wire the positive to the stud on the backside and a purple wire and a red wire to the two pin connection and the ground to a small bolt and screwed into the back of the alternator..... Again this thing is charging awesome....Just does not turn off awesome......Any help would be greatly appreciated..... Thanks....Woody.

P.S.. I unscrewed something that was mounted on the back of the old alternator and it was full of water, probably why it was not charging......That is another story about the water......

Re: Alternator issue

you could get a simple toggle switch from radio shack for a buck or two.... if you are cheap and have already invested a lot in the incorrect parts? y'know break your hot.

The question that needs answered, is what make alternator did you remove and what kind did you put back on?

Re: Alternator issue

I got the info. now... I took off a Mando and put on a Aftermarket Item # 7273-9.. That is what is on the receipt..... I think I may have reversed the wires going to the two pin connector...Switched between the field and the stator.......Do you think if I switch these two wires that the boat will turn off when I turn the key off..... And I still need to find a place to put the ground as there is no place on the back of the alternator....... Thanks......Woody.

Re: Alternator issue

I know what a Mando alternator is and how it's wires, but have no idea what a 7273-9 is, so can't help
