i didnt think you could go to a home depo and not find a cash register open. so how do you scan a 4x8 sheet then put it on the scales?. im normally a real carm person who says please and thank you to the cashiers but the self check out machines can cause a instant blood pressure rise and before im done im normally using procusive maintenance on the machine. It like phoning and talking to the blender that doesnt understand the british accent. I would love to replay some off the recorded conversations people have with computers i know mine is real colorful.

I just pick the way to checkout the gets me out of the store the fastest. Sometimes its best to use the self checkout and sometimes its not.

Hopefully, checking out at Hope Depot or Lowes that takes a few minutes more than normal is the worst thing that happens to anyone during the day. Why do we have threads about insignificant subjects like this?

it is not an insignificant thread, those automated self check outs are taking jobs away.
granted their not the best paying jobs.
but jobs none the less.
and when the day comes that i can no longer interact with another human while i spend a butt load of money in a day, is the day i go and become a mountain man

... well, that's not altogether true. Yes, it's taken a cashier position away. But it's likely opened up a field of installers, maintenance/repair techs, etc., etc.

The issue you encountered is really one of service, and I agree with you there. Customer service is close to extinct. Even when we try to train workers to deliver good customer service it is difficult because many of them have never experienced it.

It's one of the reasons I like small local shops when I can find them ... that guy has to deliver good service in order to stay alive against the big chains.

You sound like the grocery store union people trying to get the Fresh and Easy stores to go away because they use self check. To have a cashier just so it supplies a job is ludicrous.

I do understand your issue with not having a normal check out stand open. That doesn't make sense.

If there's a "problem" with something at a self checkout I just throw it in the bag and move on, I am neither paid nor trained in retail checkout. I will attempt to flag down the person that should be there watching and helping, but I will not wait for them...

Yeah, there's a word for that.....ummmm...oh yeah... "theft".

Like the other day when I paid over $8 for some juice that was on sale for $4 but didn't ring up right? You think they haven't calculated in a huge rate of error when installing these self checkouts? They don't care, they still don't have to pay a cashier.

Is it stealing if I insist the store provide a paid employee to help me do something I could do myself?

Yes,

It is still theft, I don't care how many times you have paid more than the asking price, when you walk out of a business without paying for an item, then you have committed theft. It does not matter the circumstances, if you don't pay for it, then you stole it. It is attitudes like this that keep prices higher than they should be and when it comes down to it, we are all paying for it.

I have no tolerance, I used to put men in the brig when in the military for swiping a cigarette, from a fellow enlisted man, there is never an acceptable excuse for theft.

If you are knowingly paying $8- for a $4- item, then you are the one getting robbed..... but it is at least partially self-inflicted.

Of course not.

So should I call the store a thief? The stores that lose money from an understaffed self checkout have self inflicted that, too.

I think this thread has got very convoluted and it does not seem to be productive any longer.

Hate to say it DOB, if you are caught walking out the door without paying, you will get a ticket or go to jail, if they are caught overcharging you, then it will be a mistake, lets have some common sense here.

Wim,

I don't see it as a question, he simply had a bad experience and exercised his right to shop elsewhere, but I will agree this has gone into left field.

I guess the question was in his title, "Am I behind the times?". He just left out the question mark...... :) Hopefully we get back on track........
